Review - AMD's Upcoming Tablet Chip is Codenamed Desna

Is Advanced Micro Devices finally making a major push into the tablet market? That's the signal sent by leaked product roadmap slides showing plans for an AMD tablet chip codenamed Desna that surfaced on NGOHQ.com last week.
The slides don't offer any specs for AMD's Z-Series accelerated processing unit, or APU, nor do they name a release date other than the heading "2011 AMD HD Tablet Platform Overview."

Here's what we do know. AMD thinks Desna is well-suited for both consumer media tablets and devices built for business use. The chip maker is playing up its graphics prowess with promises of "smooth streaming HD video," AdobeFlash 10.2 acceleration, Microsoft Office 10 visual enhancements, and support for DirectX 11 and Windows 7 Effects.

Desna also runs accelerated HTML 5 and Int

ernet Explorer 9, while "leveraging the Microsoft Windows application base," which sounds a bit like AMD saying, "we don't actually have an app store for this chip."

The Z-Series platform's commercial play seems to be summed up with promises of "full integration and support in IT environments," "unparalleled versatility and security," and "enhanced productivity."
Whether AMD's "ultimate HD tablet" chip finds purchase with device makers remains to be seen. So far, the vast majority of media tablets shipped since Apple reinvented the category with its iPad feature chips based on the ARM architecture. AMD and its larger rival Intel, the two biggest makers of x86-based chips, have yet to find any real tablet success.

AMD Desna Roadmap Leak
AMD does have one model to follow, however. Another rival, Nvidia, has married its graphics processor technology with an ARM-based CPU in its Tegra tablet platform. Tegra's been a big hit with many tablet makers not named Apple.

Can AMD do the same with its Fusion APUs, which also closely integrate both CPU and GPU computing power? The x86 architecture AMD uses on the CPU side has drawbacks that have caused tablet makers to largely pick ARM chips for their devices—higher power draws and thermals, relatively short battery life, and slower boot times being principle x86 features that device makers find unappealing.

But AMD has been getting its thermals down to tablet-type ranges with its latest embedded APUs. And come to think of it, there's nothing on the leaked slides that says Desna has an x86 CPU.

ARM vice president of technology Jem Davies is keynoting AMD's upcoming Fusion Developer Summit and that's led to speculation that AMD could take a stab at the tablet market with an ARM license of its own.
The slides featuring Desna were actually just a small part of the overall leaked roadmap.

Other slides detailed AMD's upcoming Fusion platforms for notebooks of varying sizes, desktops, all-in-on PCs, and embedded systems. One big reveal is AMD's claim that its new "Llanno"-based notebook platforms add a whopping 3.5 hours of battery life to the 6.5 hours the 2010 platforms delivered.

AMD is calling that extra battery life "AllDay Power."

Another slide has a pair of pie charts showing what is presumably the use of real estate on Intel's Sandy Bridge chips as compared with AMD's Llano parts. The Sandy Bridge CPUs devote slightly more than half of the die to x86 cores and cache, with about a third going to "uncore" transistors (L3 cache, bus controllers, etc.), and maybe a fifth of die space dedicated to graphics processing.

AMD's A-Series Llano dies, by way of contrast, are roughly equal parts x86 CPU and cache, GPU, and Northbridge (pretty much what Intel calls the "uncore," just to make things confusing).

The following slide lays out just what kind of computing power AMD says it is squeezing onto its 226-sq.-mm A-Series APUs with power draws of between 35 and 45 watts. Three separate chips on previous-generation AMD platforms are combined in those next-generation APUs: A 66-sq.-mm, 13-watt Northbridge, a 200-sq.-mm., 45-watt, quad-core CPU, and finally, a discrete-class DirectX 11-compatible GPU measuring in at 108 sq. mm and drawing 26.3 watts.

AMD should be making some or all of the information in the leaked roadmap official at the ongoing Computex show in Taiwan and at its own Fusion Developer Summit later in June.

just|mobile Review - The Slide iPad stand

The just|mobile Slide
The just|mobile Slide

Holding your iPad up during use takes many forms. If you’re at your desk, a full sized stand can be used. But if you’re on the go, and working from random places with your phone, other materials, maybe eating or collaborating and want to have the device at a consistent angle without having to hold it, what do you do? The award-winning team at tools has come up with an elegant solution, being manufactured and sold by just|mobile: the Slide iPad stand.

At first glance, it’s just a strange slab of aluminum with a hook on one end and a loop on the other. At 3.5″ x 4.5″, it’s not an imposing device, either. But placed within that loop is a rubber cylinder that changes this simple piece into an infinitely adjustable holder for your iPad, iPhone hp 2230s battery dell d630 battery , Kindle, or about any single-surfaced device. The secret is in the cylinder.

To use it, you place the cylinder on the slide, where it fits snugly against the hook part. Soft rubber pads on the bottom protect furniture from scratches. Roll the cylinder up slightly, and place your tablet between the lip and the rubber roller, and release both. The slight weight of the tablet will hold the roller against the slide, and keep everything as you left it.

Adjustments are easy: To lower your device, reach behind, roll the cylinder up, and lower the tablet to the place you want it to be. To raise it, simply tilt the tablet up to where you want it, and then release. The roller will roll down as you bring the tablet hp pavilion dv6 battery Dell vostro 1520 battery forward and hold it in place. It’s infinitely adjustable through it’s range, and there’s a slight lip at the top to prevent the roller from sliding off the back. Pretty neat.

It is quite stable, either at a low angle for typing on the virtual keyboard, or playing a game or whatever. In portrait orientation, tapping near the top of the device can cause it to roll backwards, possibly unhooking it from the front lip. That’s an extreme case, however, but if the iPad is in a cover, it is more likely to happen.
It will work with some cases and covers, but works best with a naked device. You’ll have to test them on a case-by-case basis.

At $40, it’s not cheap, but it is solidly made and works like a charm. It makes a very elegant statement. There is a logo on the front of the lip, but it’s almost invisible. There’s even a black velveteen drawstring bag (with another just|mobile logo) to carry it in, which will prevent it from coming apart or scratching anything in your bag. I give it four stars out of five.

Somthing About The Mac scareware Everybopdy Need to Know

The fact that Mac users have fallen victim to "scareware" scams -- the kind that have long plagued Windows users -- shouldn't come as a surprise. After all, fake antivirus software schemes like MacDefender don't have to rely on exploitable vulnerabilities, but instead typically depend on tricking users into visiting malicious sites and duping them into installing the software.

And Mac users, for all their pretensions otherwise, are as fallible as the next person.

But from the news accounts this month about MacDefender, and the posts not only on Mac-specific blogs but also on ones usually devoted to Windows Asus a32-f3 battery Mitac bp-8089 battery , you could be forgiven for thinking that Macs are suddenly the victims of choice.

They're not. Windows machines remain the most common target because, well, globally Windows PCs outnumber Mac OS by more than 16-to-1.

What is true is that Mac users now face the same scareware scams that Windows owners have had to deal with for years.

So what's the deal? Macpocalypse or not? And what should you watch for, and what can you do to keep safe?

Those are the questions we try to answer.

Is MacDefender a worm? Nope. Although MacDefender and its ilk fall under the general term "malware" -- as in, it's malicious in some way -- it's not a virus, not a worm, not a true Trojan horse.

Instead, its one of a long line of "scareware" or "rogueware," terms that apply to fake -- hence "rogue" -- software that tries to spook you -- that's the "scare" -- into paying for a worthless program.

The labels are usually slapped on phony security software that claims a computer is heavily infected with worms, viruses and other malware. Such software Panasonic VW-VBG260 Battery Compaq presario cq60 battery nags users with pervasive pop-ups and fake alerts until they fork over the "registration" fee, which in MacDefender's case ranges between $60 and $80.

The criminals monetize their work by collecting these fees. And it's a profitable trade, at least where Windows scareware's concerned. Back in 2008, SecureWorks, now owned by Dell, said that some bad guys were making as much as $5 million a year shilling scareware.

So MacDefender isn't hacking my Mac? No. Although scareware targeting Windows has been known to silently plant itself on PCs after other malware first exploits a security vulnerability in the OS or other software, MacDefender doesn't.

That's a possible future move, of course, assuming attackers spend the time digging up an unpatched vulnerability in, say, Mac OS X or a browser like Safari or Firefox, and then write an exploit.
So how do Macs get infected with things like MacDefender? Easy, they dupe users into doing the job for them.

More related business you maybe like :

The group behind MacDefender entices victims to malicious sites, where a Web page that looks like the Mac Finder appears, runs a phony virus scan, then claims that the machine is infected with dozens of Trojans. When the unsuspecting user clicks the "OK" button, MacDefender downloads to the Mac.
Such social engineering-style attacks are commonplace on Windows, but have been rare on Macs. Looks like that party is over.

Okay, so I fell for the ruse. What happens next? Once it's downloaded, MacDefender automatically pops up an install screen on Macs where Safari is running.

If you used another browser to download the scareware -- Firefox or Chrome, for instance -- the criminals rely on you to find the just-obtained installation package in the browser's download destination and click on it.

Next you'll see a typical Mac installation process. (In earlier versions you had to enter your administrator password, but that requirement's been eliminated in the most recent version, dubbed "MacGuard.")
Once MacDefender's fooled you into installing it, the scareware runs another scan and drops numerous alerts on the screen, all part of the scam to make you think your Mac is infected.

To remove the "infections," you have to pay up by entering your credit card information.

I'm not completely stupid ... I just won't pay up. What happens then? MacDefender -- which also goes by names like MacSecurity, MacProtector and now, MacGuard -- duns you with those irritating pop ups, flashes an icon in the menu bar, and worst of all, opens pornographic pages in your browser every few minutes.

That last is a new twist to spur you to pay for the scareware.

"We think they're doing this because most people will assume that that means they've got a virus on their Mac, and they need to get rid of it by paying for the program," said Peter James of Mac-only security software maker Intego in an interview earlier this month.

MacDefender automatically runs each time you start your Mac, so you can't get rid of it by restarting or shutting down the machine.

So it's here to stay? Isn't there a way to get rid of it? Yes, you can scrub your Mac manually.

Earlier this week, Apple hp nc6400 battery  Toshiba pa3534u-1brs battery finally acknowledged the MacDefender scareware campaign by posting a support document on its site. That document spells out the removal steps you should take.

Can't the Mac remove this itself? Not yet. But Apple's promised an update to Mac OS X 10.6, aka Snow Leopard, that will.

"In the coming days, Apple will deliver a Mac OS X software update that will automatically find and remove MacDefender malware and its known variants." Apple said in the support document it published Tuesday. "The update will also help protect users by providing an explicit warning if they download this malware."
Only Snow Leopard has rudimentary antivirus capabilities, which can warn users of a small number of threats. That same feature can also quarantine already-downloaded files that it deems dangerous.

But Apple seems to be saying that it will add a cleaning tool to Snow Leopard that can scrub an already infected Mac. If so, that would be a first.

And it would mean that Apple Dell xps m1530 battery Dell vostro 1520 battery would be following in the footsteps of Microsoft, which has offered free cleaning tools -- notably the Malicious Software Removal Tool, or MSRT -- for years. MSRT is updated at least once each month, then pushed to customers via the Windows Update service.

People running older versions of Mac OS X, including 10.5, aka Leopard and 10.4, the even older Tiger, presumably will be on their own.

How pervasive is MacDefender? No one really knows.

A back-of-the-envelope estimate by Ed Bott, a ZDNet blogger who usually writes about Windows but has dealt out a series on MacDefender, put the number of infections between 60,000 and 125,000.
While security firms that sell Mac antivirus software have not tossed out numbers like that, at least one -- Intego -- has cited Bott's estimates and concluded that "this fake antivirus has been extremely effective in tricking Mac users."

Today, Finnish antivirus company F-Secure said it had seen "a significant rise on infections with the Mac rogue Trojans," but didn't specify the raw numbers or the rate of increase in infections.

Companies like Intego, of course, have an interest in touting MacDefender's ubiquity: They sell antivirus software for the Mac.

F-Secure, in fact, launched its first Mac-specific product today.

Symantec, which has one of the world's largest network of malware sensors and "honeypot" systems -- and also sells Mac security software -- said it didn't have "much if anything, in the way of hard data/numbers" on the Mac scareware campaigns.

Bottom line: There's no solid evidence yet on how many Mac users are falling for the con.

Why the Mac? Why now? The question should be, "Why not before this?"

Scareware has hammered Windows users for years, and remains a very popular way for criminals to make money. According to Microsoft's latest security intelligence report, the company's MSRT cleaned millions of scareware-infected Windows PCs last year.

Both Intego and Microsoft have reported connections between MacDefender and a gang responsible for one of the biggest Windows scareware families.

Intego has said that the group simply added MacDefender to its scam arsenal by developing the Mac-specific fake antivirus program, then seeded it to the same malicious sites that were already serving up Windows scareware, in effect getting a bigger bang for its buck.

Apple's increased sales of Macs may have triggered the move by the gang. While Windows PC sales have stalled -- and still greatly outnumber Mac sales -- Apple's sales of desktops and notebooks has outpaced PC sales for 20 consecutive quarters.

Where there's a market for malware, there's malware.

What can I do to keep MacDefender and its like off my Mac? Lots of things, actually.

For one, be wary of search results on hot news topics, since scareware scammers constantly "poison" those results to push their sites higher on the list. When MacDefender Compaq nc4400 battery compaq nc6400 battery first appeared, it was spread through sites that ranked high on Google Image searches, and those resulting from searches for information on Osama Bin Laden's death.

For another, don't install anything you haven't downloaded yourself.

If you browse with Safari, head to its Preferences screen, then uncheck the box marked "Open 'safe' files after downloading" at the bottom of the General tab: That keeps Safari from automatically opening the installation screen of MacDefender.

Only type in your account password when installing software you actually want and asked to be installed. If the account password dialog pops up and you don't know why, don't enter your password.

Speaking of accounts, the newest MacGuard scam doesn't require a password when you're running under an administrator account. You might want to switch to a standard account instead, which will prompt you for a password when MacGuard tries to install. Check out this Apple support document for how to set up a standard account in Snow Leopard.

Don't pay for security software you haven't asked for. Don't enter your credit card information in any prompt to register such software.

Consider adding an antivirus program to your Mac. Sophos gives one away free, and others, including F-Secure, Intego and Symantec, sell products that will block scareware and remove it if it's infected your machine.

Top Six ways to improve iPhone battery life You ought to know

Tips  improve iPhone battery life post by goodlaptopbattery.co.uk

As the iPhone 4 approaches its first birthday (and previous models approach their second, third, etc.), it’s time to start looking at ways to improve battery life. After all, it’s around the one-year mark that most batteries start to lose some capacity, meaning your phone simply won’t run as long as it used to between charges.

New York Times tech columnist David Pogue recently got four iPhone battery tips from an Apple store Genius–some of them obvious, some not-so-obvious. Here’s an overview of the advice, along with my thoughts and two additional tips from yours truly.
  • 1. Turn off push e-mail. No doubt about it, forcing your iPhone to check for new mail every 15 minutes–especially if you have multiple accounts–will kill your battery Hp probook 4710s battery hp nc6400 battery in a hurry. It can kill your productivity, too. Tell friends and co-workers that if they need to reach you urgently, send a text.
  • 2. Turn off location services. A lot of apps tap the phone’s GPS when they don’t really need to. Head to Settings, Location Services, and disable the feature for the apps that can live without a location check. (I’m looking at you, Angry Birds!)
  • 3. Turn off notifications. While you’re in the Settings app, tap Notifications and turn off all unnecessary sounds, alerts, and Home Screen badges. As Pogue points out, the apps that use these features have to monitor your iPhone–and that uses up juice.
  • 4. Manually terminate background apps. Apple says background apps aren’t technically “running” unless they’re front and center, meaning they shouldn’t be drawing any power. Pogue’s Genius says otherwise, and that you should manually shut down all background apps. I disagree, as I think the hassle of constantly monitoring and terminating apps isn’t worth the battery dell latitude d630 battery Hp pavilion dv9000 battery boost you might get. (Pogue cites a friend’s dramatic improvement in battery life after following all four of these tips, but I think turning off push e-mail made all the difference.)
  • 5. Lower the screen brightness. Nothing sucks up juice like the screen. If your brightness setting is cranked to maximum, knock it down to 50 percent. You won’t like this at first, but I guarantee after an hour you won’t even notice the difference. You will, however, get longer battery life.
  • 6. Keep it out of your pocket. The hotter your iPhone gets, the faster the battery will die. And you know what’s in your pocket? Body heat. If you can, let the phone ride shotgun in your purse or briefcase, or keep it clipped to your belt.

Simple 7 ways to work faster in Windows 7 | www.batterylaptoppower.com

In Windows 7, Microsoft added a variety of features that make users more efficient and productive than with previous versions of Windows, but there can be a small learning curve for some of them. If your job is supporting the growing number of Windows 7 users, pass along these seven tips to help them work faster and get more done -- or use them yourself to boost your own Windows 7 efficiency.

 1. Get the most out of Jump Lists

Jump Lists are one of Windows 7's Symbol 21-61261-01 battery Symbol MC9090 battery secret efficiency weapons. With previous versions of Windows, the Start Menu displayed a list of recently used files that users navigated to with one click. But this list linked to only certain file types, and it showed only the last 10 files, quickly cycling items off the list.Jump List in Windows 7 Start Menu

A Jump List shows recently used files for various applications in your Start Menu.

The Jump Lists in Windows 7 take the Recent Items concept and apply it on an application-by-application basis to give you fast, one-click access to the files you've used most recently. A little arrow to the right of the application name in the Start Menu indicates the presence of a Jump List. You hover over the application to expand the Jump List and see a list of the recently opened files for that program; click the one you want to open it instantly.

The number of items maintained in each Jump List defaults to 10, but you can expand it to up to 60 in the Start Menu settings: Right-click on the Windows taskbar and select Properties, then click on the Start Menu tab in the Properties window and select the Customize button. At the bottom of the Start Menu customization area, you can set the number of items to display in the Jump List. Whatever you set it for, though, will be the setting for all Jump Lists. There is no way to customize it on an individual program basis.

More important, you can pin items to the Jump List so you don't have to worry about them cycling off. For example, if you have a file that you access on a regular basis, you can click the pushpin icon that appears next to the file name when you hover over it in the Jump List to pin it to the list permanently. Pinned files appear above the dynamic Jump List and do not cycle off. To unpin an item from a Jump List, select it in the list, click its pushpin icon, and select "Unpin from this list."

Jump Lists don't stop with the Start Menu; they also appear when you right-click an application's icon in the Windows 7 Panasonic EY9251 battery Dewalt DE0241 battery taskbar. In addition to the same list of pinned and recently used files that appears in the Start Menu Jump List for that application, you'll see a few tasks, such as "Pin this program to taskbar."

2. Beef up context menus

You are most likely familiar with the concept of the context menu. If you right-click on the Windows 7 desktop or in an application, a menu of options appears that varies based on your context -- what application you're in and what you're doing.

As they stand, context menus help you work faster in Windows 7 by providing quick access to common functions. However, by pressing the Shift key as you right-click the mouse, you can access an expanded list of context menu items that enable you to work even more efficiently. For example, if you Shift-right-click on a file or folder, one of the options that appears is "Copy as path," which copies the directory path to the file or folder location, such as "C:\Users\Tony\Documents."

3. Enable AHCI

Editor's note: This tip involves editing the Windows Registry, which shouldn't be done on a company-owned machine unless you know it's OK under your IT department policies. And always back up your Registry before changing it. For more info about working with the Registry, see "The tweaker's guide to the Windows Registry."

Windows 7 supports AHCI (Advanced Host Controller Interface), an Intel standard that can speed up hard drive operations and enable more efficient multitasking. If your computer already had AHCI enabled when you installed Windows 7, the AHCI driver was installed by default. But if AHCI was not enabled in your system BIOS at the time of installation, turning it on in the BIOS after the fact could render the system unusable.

To see if AHCI is already enabled on your Windows 7 machine, go into the Device Manager (click Start --> Control Panel --> System and Security --> System --> Device Manager), expand the section labeled IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers and look for an entry that says Standard AHCI 1.0 Serial ATA Controller. If it's not there, you will need to enable AHCI in Windows 7 before you enable it in the BIOS.

Here's how:

1. Click on the Start button.
2. Type "regedit" into the Search field and hit Enter to start the Registry Editor.
3. You will most likely get a UAC prompt asking, "Do you want to allow the following program to make changes to this computer?" Click Continue.
4. Navigate through the Registry to
5. In the right pane, select Start.
6. From the top menu bar, select Edit --> Modify.
7. In the Value data box, enter 0 (the numeral zero) and click OK.
8. After you complete the changes, close the Registry Editor by simply clicking the red 'X' at the upper right of the window.

Editing the Registry

You can use the Registry Editor to enable AHCI in Windows 7.

Now that AHCI is enabled in Windows 7, it's safe to enable it in the BIOS.

1. Reboot the computer and enter the BIOS hp nc6400 battery Compaq nc6400 battery configuration to enable AHCI support in the BIOS. The process for entering the BIOS configuration varies from system to system but typically involves hitting F2 or Del during the system boot process; the key to press is generally displayed on the initial splash screen.

2. Look in the BIOS configuration for a setting related to the hard drive, or AHCI, and enable it. Some systems let you set it for automatic, and the system will enable or disable AHCI automatically if it detects an operating system that supports it.

3. Save the settings and exit the BIOS configuration (usually by hitting F10). The system will then reboot.

Once Windows 7 boots up, it will automatically install the necessary AHCI drivers and automatically reboot itself once more to complete the process. Now your drive is set for speed.

4. Get around Windows with the Aero interface

Windows 7's Aero interface is more than just eye candy. It includes an array of features to help you work more efficiently.

For starters, a feature called Aero Peek makes navigating through open programs faster -- especially when you have many instances of an application open at the same time, such as multiple browser windows in Internet Explorer. Just hover over the application's icon in the taskbar to see thumbnail images of all the application windows, and click the one you want to bring it to the top. It's much faster than reading through a text list or Alt-tabbing through a series of windows.

Taskbar Peek

Hovering over items in the taskbar displays thumbnail images of the open instances of the program.
Want to see through the clutter of open windows to your desktop? Aero Peek comes in handy here as well: Hover the mouse pointer over the tiny rectangular button at the far right of the taskbar to make all your windows Dell inspiron 9400 battery Dell inspiron 1000 battery disappear, leaving only their outlines visible -- or click that button to instantly minimize all windows. Even niftier is the Aero Shake function, which minimizes all windows except the one you're currently using: Just click and hold the window's title bar and give the mouse a quick shake back and forth. Repeat the process to make the other windows reappear.

Aero Snap is another very useful feature, particularly if you have a large monitor. If you drag a window to the left or right side of the display, it will "snap" into place, automatically formatting itself to fill that half of the screen. It's great when you're conducting research: Rather than having to constantly tab back and forth between windows, you can snap a browser window to the left side of the screen and a Word document to the right so you can view them side by side. Snap also lets you drag a window to the top of the screen to maximize it for distraction-free work.

5. Organize your files with libraries

Windows has offered relatively logical file organization for some time now by providing Documents, Music, Pictures and Videos folders and adding those types of content to the appropriate folder by default. But sometimes this filing system is inadequate or confusing. For example, you might be working on a project that uses multiple file types, or files and folders that don't fit the default Windows folders.

Or you might need to work with files that are stored in different physical locations, such as your computer's primary hard drive, an external USB drive and a network file server. Keeping track of all the files you need can be a pain -- you usually end up navigating to different locations through Explorer or maintaining redundant copies of the same files, which often don't get synced properly.

Windows 7 offers a huge step forward for file management by introducing virtual libraries. At first glance, the Library system looks pretty much the same as the old folder system -- there are default libraries for documents, music, pictures and videos -- but it's much more versatile because libraries aren't limited by the physical location of folders and files.

For example, if you have some documents stored locally in your Documents folder and others stored in a folder on a network file server, you can add both folders to the Documents library so you can view and access them in a single place. The files stay in their original locations; you just get to them through a single library if you choose.

To add a folder to a library, open the library, then click the link next to the word "Includes" at the top of the display. In the console that appears, you can add or remove folders from the library.
You can also create entirely new custom libraries. Working on a big project? Create a Projects library with a subfolder for that project, then add the various folders and files you need. Working on project tasks is much more efficient when you can get to everything you need in a single library.

To create a new library, right-click Libraries in the left pane of Windows Explorer and select New --> Library. Give your library a name, open it up, and click the "Include a folder" button to add content.

library index message

You can't add a network folder to your Dell vostro 1520 battery dell vostro 1500 battery  library unless the contents of the folder have already been indexed.

Note: In order for a folder to be added to a library, the files within it must be indexed by Windows 7. This happens automatically for most files and folders on your machine. If a network folder has been indexed on the device where it is stored, you should be able to add it to your library. If it is not indexed, you can index it by right-clicking it and selecting "Always available offline." Once it is indexed for offline access, you can add it to your library.

6. Take advantage of keyboard shortcuts

Navigating Windows 7's graphical interface with a mouse is fine much of the time, but if you are busy typing away, it can be an inconvenience to move a hand away from the keyboard to the mouse and back. Thankfully, Windows has long included key combinations and shortcuts to help you get around and perform an array of tasks without taking your hands off the keyboard.

We're all familiar with basic shortcuts such as Ctrl+C for copying a selection and Ctrl+V for pasting it, but there are hundreds available, as shown in Microsoft's comprehensive list of keyboard shortcuts, grouped by type. Here are some of the most useful I've found for working in Windows 7:

At first, learning a bunch of keyboard shortcuts may seem like an even bigger inconvenience than switching to the mouse -- you aren't familiar with them, and they require conscious thought and effort. But the more you use them, the more efficient you will be, and performing tasks without missing a stroke -- or fumbling for a mouse -- will become second nature.

7. Windows search trumps all

The ultimate shortcut in Windows 7 is the Search field in the Start Menu. Although this function is by no means new in Windows 7 Dell inspiron 1520 battery hp 530 battery , it has been significantly enhanced over previous versions, making it virtually omnipotent when it comes to finding programs, files, emails or just about anything else on your PC. Just click Start, type what you want in the Search field, and voila!

The search feature displays results instantly as you type, separated by file type -- programs, documents, emails, Control Panel, etc. When you see the result you want, just click on it to launch it.

The nice thing is that you don't have to remember the exact name of a file to find it. If you forget that the Command Prompt executable is named "cmd.exe," for example, you can just type "command prompt" in the search field and Windows 7 will take you there. You can also type in the file type, tags or keywords that are likely to appear in the content of the file, such as "project budget" to look for a budget spreadsheet you created last year and want to use as a template for a new project.

Windows Search explores all indexed locations -- including files stored in network folders that are included in libraries or marked for offline access. Program files and system files are not indexed by default. You can customize which files, folders and other content are indexed by Windows 7 using Indexing Options in the Control Panel.

If you hit Enter after typing your search term, Windows 7 will open a Windows Explorer window to display a more comprehensive list of results. If there are too many results for your search term, you can refine your search to narrow the options. Scroll to the bottom of the results in Windows Explorer and select Custom. A window will open to let you filter the results by date or file type, or select the folders to search so you can find what you are looking for faster.

Other options available at the bottom of the search results include limiting the search results to files in the Windows 7 libraries or opening the search to the whole computer -- including indexed, non-indexed, system and hidden files. You can even expand the search to the entire Internet.

Go forth and be efficient

There you have it. Many of these features take some getting used to, and most will save you only a minute here or there, but it all adds up to working more efficiently and being more productive if you take advantage of the features Microsoft has provided to you.

Top 10 greap tips for using your new iPad 2

Whether you're new to the iPad or a longtime user, here are some tips that will improve your iPad experience:

1) Trying to get through a bunch of email quickly? Archive or delete unimportant messages quickly by SWIPING on their subject line in the Mail app dell xps m1210 battery Symbol 21-65587-02 battery . Need to make room for new stuff? The swipe-to-delete gesture works in several other apps like Videos and iBooks, too.

2) Browsing Safari when a bad song comes on? DOUBLE-CLICK the home button, swipe the icons to the right, and press fast-forward in the iPod controls. (You can even use these iPod controls while your iPad is locked!)

3) Reading an article in Safari? DOUBLE-TAP a column of text to zoom into it perfectly. Once you're finished, jump back to the top of the page by tapping the very top of the iPad's screen (the status bar).

4) The SWITCH on the side of your iPad can be configured to be a mute button or a rotation lock! Choose your switch in Settings > General > Use Side Switch.

5) SHAKE your iPad to undo a cut, paste, or even a bit of typing. Just be gentle!

6) Force your iPad to DISCONNECT from WiFi networks that have limited connectivity in Settings > WiFi by pressing the blue arrow, then "Forget this Network."

7) Have an iPhone and an iPad? You can install all the iPhone apps you've already purchased on the iPad, too. Just sync your IPHONE APPS in iTunes when you connect your iPad to your Mac or PC. Many apps are built for both iPhones and iPads -- those that aren't can be scaled up by pressing the 2× button in the lower righthand corner.

8) You can SYNC YOUR BOOKS across all your devices automatically, including your bookmarks, just by turning on Settings > iBooks > Sync Collections.

9) Want to read ebooks Dell inspiron 9400 battery dell xps m1330 battery , but can't wait until payday? Browse public domain classics like Heart of Darkness and The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes available from Project Gutenberg and Google Books, and download FREE EPUBs! Just drag the files into iTunes on your Mac or PC and sync them to your iPad.

10) Prefer playing music through your computer speakers, but reading the news on the iPad? You can control iTunes playing on your Mac or PC by using the free REMOTE app.

The most successful apps usually offer some sort of new distraction or convenience. But the most exciting ones do something a little different, harnessing the power of our gadgets to help us explore and understand the world we live in. Angry Birds are fun; real birds are amazingly, profoundly, endlessly cool. So even though I hadn't had much curiosity about it until last week, I think it's kinda cool to know that the tree in front of my apartment's a Littleleaf Lindon. Or so I think. But at least I'm looking! Bring on birdsnap.

Three free iPhone apps help keep you healthy | www.goodlaptopbattery.co.uk

If you're like me, you're pretty good about exercising and eating right at home, but all your good habits go out the window when you travel. But on a recent 10-day trip, I found three free iPhone apps (two of which are also available for other smartphone platforms) invaluable for keeping me healthy.

One big hurdle to staying fit on the road is finding a place to exercise. Sure, hotels often have workout rooms or pools, but they can feel a bit creepy. Even walking or jogging outdoors can be difficult or unsafe. As an urban dweller, I'm always appalled at the dearth of sidewalks in America's suburbs and smaller cities. And while most larger cities do have sidewalks, it's easy to wander into unsafe areas when you're on unfamiliar ground.

That's why I'm so delighted with the Nike Training Club app Symbol MC9060 battery hp nc6400 battery  . It offers nearly a hundred exercises organized into dozens of 15- to 45-minute workouts, many of which require no weights or other equipment and can be done pretty much anywhere.

Not sure how to do a "Crazy Ivan"? You can watch a short video demo of each exercise for the proper form. And rather than being forced to listen to someone else's annoying music, you choose a playlist or album from your own iTunes library to accompany each workout.

I found it easy and fun to do these quick workouts in my hotel room and friends' guest rooms on my trip -- a great way to counteract the next big travel pitfall: food.

Whether you're at a business conference or on a family visit, people are constantly plying you with unhealthy snacks, alcoholic drinks, buffet breakfasts, dessert at lunchtime and other calorie-fests. You don't want to seem ungrateful, of course, so you indulge way more than you would at home. Even if you stick to semi-healthy choices, the sheer quantity and frequency of Compaq nc6400 battery Dell inspiron 9400 battery  it can make the calories add up more quickly than you realize.

Despite its silly name, MyFitnessPal is a huge help here. While there's a bit more emphasis than I'd like on "losing weight" as opposed to "eating right," this calorie counter does show basic nutritional information for the foods you eat.

Just enter everything you eat into the app, and it searches its vast database to find likely matches, along with the caloric and nutritional intake for each. Same goes for exercise: From gardening to kayaking, you'll find a slew of exercises in MyFitnessPal's database, along with the corresponding number of calories burned per minute.

If you keep up with it throughout the day, you can see at a glance how many calories you've netted -- a nice reminder that maybe you shouldn't try all four desserts at the buffet table -- and whether you need, say, more vitamin C or potassium. And unlike many other calorie counter apps, MyFitnessPal can be used when you don't have a cell or Wi-Fi signal. In addition to iOS, the app is available for Android and BlackBerry.

Finally, it's often hard to get a good night's sleep when you're travelling. There may be time-zone differences to contend with, not to mention a host of strange sounds that keep startling you awake. I've found that a little white noise goes a long way in helping me sleep away from home.

Enter TMSoft's White Noise Lite app, which offers 10 soothing sounds including waves crashing, rain pouring and crickets chirping. Truth be told, I didn't find all the sounds soothing, and there are other white noise apps out there that offer many more sounds -- but as far as I'm concerned, I just need one sound that works for me.

Unlike some white noise apps Dell vostro 1310 battery Dell studio xps 1645 battery , White Noise Lite can keep playing the sound even when the app is minimized; I found it useful to be able to do one last task in a different app without having to stop and restart the white noise. If you like, you can set timers to stop the sound during the night and play an alarm in the morning.

TMSoft also offers for-pay versions of White Noise for iOS with more sounds and configuration options, as well as an array of similar apps for Android, BlackBerry, Windows Phone and webOS.

So, far from making me stupid, my iPhone helped keep me active and well-rested on the road.

The Reasons Why You Choose Linux?

Why Linux? The user who is looking for a complete and simple desktop operating system that allows them to get work done efficiently and doesn’t get in the way—why would that person choose Linux? Why should you choose Linux?

I started using Linux because it made my job easier and because it was a fun toy. At the time, (about 8 years ago), I wouldn’t have recommended desktop Linux to any average user. In the time since, I’ve seen Linux evolve in so many different directions.

There was a time when Linux Compaq nc4200 battery Asus a32-f5 battery was the hardcore hacker’s operating system, but now it’s popular amongst students, home users, small businesses, artists, home office users and hackers alike. If you fit into any of those categories, Linux could be for you.

As Linux got simpler to use, communities of users grew around it. Every major urban area has a Linux Users Group (LUG), and Canada has some of the best: GTA Lug, Ottawa LUG, Montreal LUG, Vancouver LUG, Calgary LUG, Edmonton LUG. Although I recommend everyone start with Ubuntu (check out my article on trying Ubuntu under Windows), LUG communities really are a great way to find out about your options. Try Googling the LUG in your city.

Simultaneously, one of the best and worst things about Linux is choice. Because Linux is free and open source software, there are many many flavours of it. Unlike Windows, which exclusively belongs to Microsoft, or MacOS which belongs to Apple Apple a1189 battery Toshiba pa3533u-1brs battery , Linux doesn’t belong to anyone (or, belongs to everyone depending how you look at it). So, many companies or communities package it according to their tastes. (As of this writing, distrowatch.com is tracking nearly 700 distributions.)

Not only does one have choice with the Linux distributions itself, but the software traditionally packaged as part of a Linux desktop (media players, office productivity, graphics, etc) often come in similar variety.

With so much confusion, why bother?

More related business you maybe like :

So back to the question: why use Linux? Well…

1. Choice is good: You’ll soon learn to wade through your options quickly. However, having such control over your environment has a large impact on your work-flow and productivity. The steeper learning curve pays off big-time.

 2. Ultimate security: Linux is safer than Windows or MacOS. A lot of that is simply because there are fewer viruses, but the system is more secure in principal as well.

3. Better driver support out of the box: Don’t you hate spending hours installing drivers after a fresh Windows install? Most of your hardware should work out of the box on popular Linux distributions.

4. It’s more complete: Out of the box, most distributions come with professional quality office productivity, graphics software, and alike. You don’t have to fool around installing things after a reformat.

5. Package management: The keystone of any Linux distribution is a package management system. Unlike Win and Mac, if you want more software, you browse through a catalogue and have a 1-click install.

6. Unified updates: This is really part of package management, but it’s important enough to be mentioned on its own. When you do a software update, it updates all of your software in one go. No need for Adobe updater, Firefox updater, Windows Live update, Java update,…

7. More dynamic: There’s always something new in the Linux Compaq nc6000 battery Hp probook 4510s battery scene for those feeling adventurous. Also, bugs are quickly fixed since the gap between user and developer is quite thin. The Linux development model is driven by the user experience.

8. Better support: Support for Win and Mac is expensive. The Linux community is incredibly friendly and helpful. Almost any problem is never more than a Google search from being fixed, but if you need to, there’s always someone to ask. (In many cases, you are free to ask the actual developer!)

9. More stable: Crash less, and almost never reformat. Linux is designed to run for months, even years at a time with minimal maintenance.

10. PDF creation and editing: Most distributions support PDF creation out of the box. A few mouse clicks will get you a pdf editor too.

11. MS Office support out of the box:LibreOffice or OpenOffice ship with almost all distributions of Linux, and both support editing and saving MS office documents.

I can’t leave out the most important reason for anyone to use Linux: the more people we have using it, the better it becomes. Linux has grown so much in just the past few years, and every year it grows faster. Ubuntu really got the ball rolling, and now Google (a la Android) has made Linux mainstream as a mobile platform. It is an irrepressible part of the ever progressing technology landscape.

Why Brands like Twitter and Apple are Deeply influence our life?

Yesterday, Bill Keller of the New York Times struck a nerve with his post on the Twitter trap he laid a few days prior; particularly the way it eats into its users' “normal” social interactions and its potential to "make you stupid." Responses from Twitter's loyalists across the web were swift, thorough, and at times brash – the type of knee-jerk reactions you can only get when people care more deeply for something than most would care to admit.

Quite frankly, I was one of them.

It's a strange sort of fanaticism, especially when you take a step back and realize that, all things considered, you're really only barking about a Compaq nc6400 battery Panasonic EY9251 battery product. It begets all sorts of defensive stances, ranging from frumpy indignation (“Bill Keller is stupid”) to highly thought-out dissertations.

A new BBC documentary, The Secrets of Superbrands (which we wrote about earlier) explores the relationships between megabrands like Twitter, Apple and Google, taking a look at the rabid loyalty they inspire. The first episode of the series enlisted a team of neuroscientists to take a look the mind of Alex Brooks, the editor of World of Apple who says he spends 24 hours a day thinking about the manufacturer's products.

In the experiment, they hooked Brooks' brain to an MRI scanner and showed him various images of Apple and non-Apple products to elicit a synaptic response.

The scan revealed that “[t]he Apple products Dell latitude e6400 battery Dell vostro 1310 battery are triggering the same bits of [Brooks'] brain as religious imagery triggers in a person of faith.” As one scientists puts it, “This suggests that the big tech brands have harnessed, or exploit, the brain areas that have evolved to process religion.”

It's a startling – if disturbing – notion to think that we're at the whims of the megabrands' marketing teams, hard-wired to care about something in a way that's as powerful as our personal convictions. Aren't they just products?

More related business you maybe like:

But the internet's fiery backlash to Keller's assertions about Twitter yesterday seem to only confirm what we don't want to believe: We really do care.

It raises an interesting question: Is placing faith in a product – especially a piece of technology – necessarily a bad thing? “Brand loyalty” is one of those terms first year MBA students like to throw around that looks great in a PowerPoint presentation, but – at least I'd like to believe – we're not as blindly dumb as a study like this paints us to be.

We can weigh evidence and make sound decisions as to whether something really benefits us or not. Apple's cultish following often invites finger wagging from PC users, but isn't that just another form of brand loyalty? This knee-jerk loyalty is – on a subconscious level – likely another way to reinforce what works for us personally, so that we're not wasting active thoughts on something that doesn't.

Smartphone Review - Samsung Galaxy S II Second coming

Review Sometimes the Mark II versions of phones feel like they’ve had little more than a light skim with the update brush. Yet with the Samsung Galaxy S II, this is certainly not the case. While, the original Galaxy S was a fine handset, this latest refit includes dual core processor, stunning AMOLED screen, a fine 8Mp camera, over-air syncing and more, all packed within one of the slimmest enclosures you’re likely to come across.

Samsung Galaxy S II
Second coming: Samsung Galaxy S II

The handset measures 125 x 66 x 8.5mm, which almost makes it feel more like a stretched out playing card than a top-of-the-range Android smartphone. Not only is it very slim, at 115g it’s very light too, though part of that can be attributed to the rather flimsy plastic back panel.

The front mostly consists of a single sheet of glass, surrounded by a thin metal rim, with a single hard home button at the Acer as07b31 battery Acer batbl50l6 battery bottom. Pressing it kicks the screen into life and reveals a touch sensitive button on either side: back and menu, but no Android search button.

On the sides are a slimline volume rocker and power button, with a 3.5mm headphone jack on top and a micro USB power/sync slot on the bottom. Indeed, everything is where it should be, although there’s no hard camera shutter button.

Technically speaking, the 4.3in screen’s 480 x 800-pixel resolution may not be quite as sharp as the iPhone’s 640 x 960, but in use, you’d hardly notice. It looks great, with extremely vibrant colours and very bright too, which helps when you’re looking at it in sunlight, along with its very wide viewing angle too. The screen’s not just a pretty face either, since it’s admirably sensitive, distinguishing between brushes and presses with ease.
Samsung Galaxy S II

Slim, for sure

The Galaxy S II is one of the growing band of dual core handsets, intended to deliver ultra-fast processing leading to more complex gaming, super smooth hi-res film viewing and advanced multi-tasking, despite the potential to exact a heavy toll on the battery life.

Background tasks

Sure enough, the handset feels very fast, with virtually no sign of lag when switching between apps. There are still occasional signs of slowness when browsing the web, of course, but that’s more to do with the Acer aspire 5520 battery Acer aspire 6935g battery quality of internet connection rather than processing power.

Samsung Galaxy S II

Readers' Hub

But as with LG’s Optimus 2X, while the Galaxy S II's 1.2GHz processor is fast, it’s not shockingly faster than its 1GHz single core predecessor. Until you realise that you haven’t had to shut any apps down for a while and you’ve still got several whizzing away in the background without any sign of slowing down. Only then does it become abundantly clear that something different is going on, no doubt helped by its 1GB RAM.

There was no problem with call quality, which always came through with crystal clarity. It’s running Android 2.3 Gingerbread – strictly speaking it’s 2.3.3 rather than 2.3.4 – so it’s lacking native video chat for now, though an update is likely. And, as usual, Samsung has introduced a few interface tweaks to make it its own. The latest TouchWiz 4.0 has the distinctive Samsung look, but also adds some extra apps, including four ‘Hubs’ which group linked apps and functions together for convenience: Social, Music, Game and Reader.

The social hub pulls all your networking updates (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn) together into a single feed – something no smartphone can do without these days, and it does a perfectly good job of it too.

The Game Hub features some extra games but it needs a bit of development to mark it out as an improvement on what you can get from the standard Android Dell d630 battery Dell wr050 battery Market. The Reader Hub, meanwhile, gives you access to books from Kobo, newspapers from PressDisplay and magazines from Zinio, which is a decent offering overall, as well as the option to download e-Book apps, such as Amazon’s Kindle, from the Market. PIC

Games Hub

The Music Hub powered by 7digital gives you quick access to MP3 downloads, which is fine, but it’s not connected directly to the Android music player – so if you want to play your own stored music, you’ll have to come out of it and load up a different player. There’s plenty of room for tracks though, with 8GB of memory on board which you can boost by another 32GB using the microSD memory card.

Photo call

Samsung has shown in the past that it can make a decent camera, and such is the case with the 8Mp snapper here offering a good range of shooting and scene modes, including macro and action shot, plus handy features like face and blink detection and anti-shake.

Samsung Galaxy S II

Android photography woes of old are a thing of the past with this 8Mp camera

Picture quality is generally good, with nice sharp edges and good colour balance. Colours can look a little over-emphasised on screen but never appear washed out. When you’re viewing your gallery it throws up some random pics in the background – a nice touch, and a gentle nod of the head to Windows Phone 7.

It can record HD video too at up to 1920 x 1080, which you’ll only find on dual core handsets, which looks crisp and generally smooth. There’s also a 2Mp camera on the front in preparation for video chat, when it becomes available with the next operating system update.

Web pages render well with text flowing neatly. Besides, the now standard pinch to zoom there’s a new trick to browsing too – with the motion sensor on, you can hold two points on the screen and then simply tilt back or forwards to zoom in or out. Incidentally, you can use the motion sensor when adding widgets and shortcuts to each of the seven home pages too – press and hold on an icon, then tilt left or right to find the page you want to put it on.

Samsung Kies desktop sync application
Syncing is performed with Samsung’s Dell inspiron 6400 battery Dell studio 1555 battery Kies software which works fine once you get the hang of its iTunes-style structure, although its Windows-only. There’s also Kies Air, which allows you to sync using a Wi-Fi link. Slightly awkwardly, this involves getting an IP address from the app, then typing it into a browser, which then gives you the option to swap media, stream music from your phone and send text messages.

Daylight savings

There’s no separate HDMI slot for direct digital connection to your TV, although Samsung's optional MHL micro USB adapter performs this task. However, out of the box, you can use the DLNA capability allows you to connect wirelessly to your home network and stream your pics and vids that way.

Samsung Galaxy S II

Niftiness comes at a price: dual core handsets inevitably drain battery power more quickly
Other useful apps Hp pavilion dv9000 battery Symbol 21-61261-01 battery include the Task Manager, which gives you extra control of what apps you’re running so you can preserve battery life. With Polaris Office you can create and edit Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents, and while it’s not quite the full Microsoft Office shilling, it gets the job done.

Talking of which, the powerful processor and the temptation to keep apps running does tend to hit the battery, and I never managed to get a full day of, admittedly, heavy use out of it. More diligent use of the Task Manager would no doubt make a difference though.

Verdict

The Samsung Galaxy S II is a significant improvement on its predecessor and a terrific Android phone. While the battery life isn't the greatest, its slim profile, powerful processor, 8Mp camera and (almost) all the latest treats Android has to offer, make it the top dog in its field.
