The world's largest software company told employees on Thursday that it's giving them pay raises and changing the way it awards bonuses beginning this September.

Further, Microsoft changed its compensation structure, to make the review and reward process clearer.

According to Ballmer a portion of stock award targets are being moved into employees' base salary, meaning more cash up front.

Microsoft has seen a slow and steady trickle of people depart for Google and Facebook and to others like Amazon and Juniper.

Staff have departed from engineering, marketing, product development, and advertising in the corporate division and from the Windows, Internet Explorer, online, Xbox, and - shockingly, given its success - Kinect groups. Employees have gone over to the offices of rivals in Microsoft's back yard of Washington State as well as in other geographies.

Microsoft has been consistently knocked for no longer being the place for innovation or excitement in tech.

Microsoft ranks third behind Google and Facebook, according to Glassdoor.com, when it comes to average salary for a software engineer. Significantly, the new system sees Microsoft shift compensation away from stock. Microsoft shares are not a growth commodity, and in the last five years, prices have ranged between $15 and $37. While Google's stock growth curve has slowed, shares have traded between $262 and $714. Facebook is not a listed company.
Making it harder for Microsoft is the fact Google and Facebook are locked in a salary and compensation arms race against each other. Google in late 2010 awarded a 10 per cent pay raise to all staff. According to reports, it has also offered millions of dollars in restricted stock or pay raises to stop staff going to Facebook. Sometimes the offers have worked, others not.

New solar battery - Transparent Photovoltaic Cells Turn Windows Into Solar Panels

A new class of transparent photovoltaic cells has been developed that can turn an ordinary windowpane into a solar panel without impeding the passage of visible light, scientists said Tuesday.

The cells could one day transform skyscrapers into giant solar collectors, said Richard Lunt, one of the researchers on the project.

“We think there’s a lot of potential to be able to integrate these into tall buildings,” Dr. Lunt, a postdoctoral researcher at the M.I.T. Research Laboratory of Acer aspire 5610 battery dell latitude d620 battery Electronics, said in an interview.

Previous attempts at transparent solar cells have either failed to achieve high efficiency or blocked too much light to be used in windows. But the new cells, based on organic molecules similar to dyes and pigments, are tailored to absorb only the near-infrared spectrum and have the potential to transform that light into electricity at relatively high efficiency.

The current efficiency of the prototype cells is only about 2 percent, but some basic modifications, like stacking the cells, could increase efficiency to around 10 percent fairly easily, Dr. Lunt said.

The largest challenge in developing commercial applications for the new solar cells will be longevity. The cells could be packaged in the middle of double-paned windows Dell latitude e6400 battery , which would provide protection from the elements. But the longevity of the cells would still need to approach the life span of the windows themselves, which would not be replaced for decades.

“To make this thing truly useful, you do need to extend the lifetime, and make sure it reaches at least 20 years, or even longer than that,” said Vladimir Bulovic, a professor of electrical engineering at M.I.T. who collaborated on the development of the cells.

Mr. Bulovic said that previous work to extend the life span of organic light-emitting diodes, or LEDs, which share properties with the organic solar cells, indicated that the problem of longevity was not an extraordinarily difficult one.

“It appears at this point that this is an engineering problem,” he said. “I would expect that within a decade those will be solved issues.”

If the cells can be made long-lasting, they could be integrated into windows relatively cheaply, as much of the cost of conventional photovoltaics is not from the solar cell itself, but the materials it is mounted on, like aluminum and glass. Coating existing structures with solar cells would eliminate some of this material cost.

If the transparent cells ultimately prove commercially viable, the power they generate could significantly offset the energy use of large buildings, said Dr. Lunt, who will begin teaching at Michigan State University this fall.

“We’re not saying we could power the whole building, but we are talking about a significant amount of energy, enough for things like lighting and powering everyday electronics,” he said.

The Center for Excitonics, an Energy Frontier Research Center financed by the Department of Energy, provided funds for the journal Applied Physics Letters.

Is that a good idea for iPad 2 in kindergarten classrooms ?

Schools are excited about putting the Apple iPad into classrooms. But how young is too young?

Move over, finger paint. A school district in Maine recently approved a $200,000 initiative that would give each of its 285 kindergarten students a new hands-on tool: Their very own iPad 2.

Auburn, Maine, school district will be bringing the $499 Apple tablet devices into kindergarten classrooms starting in the fall with the aim of increasing literacy rates from 62 percent to 90 percent.

This isn't the first time Maine has become an early tech adopter in its educational systems. "We received some concern from individuals mainly about the developmental age in kids using this type of technology and the cost of it all," school district superintendent Tom Morrill told iPadNewsDaily. "We lose a lot of kids through the education system over time,” said Sandra Calvert, a professor and director of the Children's Digital Media Center at Georgetown University.

"There's a human emotional response that is a part of learning, too," Calvert said. "Kids develop relationships with teachers and there is a sense of warmth and encouragement that comes with that, too. Computers can be fun and engaging, but it's not the same experience as interacting with a real person."

Superintendent Morrill said that people shouldn’t fear that the new iPad implementation will replace teachers in the future.

"Kindergartners are not too young for the iPad — in fact, it's an ideal platform for them," Calvert said. "This age group can use their hands, grow fine motor skills and not have to worry about moving a mouse as they would on a traditional desktop computer. The device also allows kids to practice certain skills, such as identifying certain letters and colors.
However, superintendent Morrill said that the devices will not be used in place of other hands-on skills that are critical in the development process.

Allison Druin, author of "Mobile Technology for Children: Designing for Interaction and Learning" (Morgan Kaufmann Publishers, 2009) agrees that the tablet is well-suited for this age range.

"Kids are used to growing up in a technology age, so they will know how to handle it," Druin said. "The iPod Touch is similar in that it can be used with kids at a young age, but when creating something rather than just consuming information, it’s harder to do so on smaller screens."

Challenges ahead

Druin, an associate dean for research at University of Maryland's information school, said she thinks the outcome of the Maine initiative could have implications for whether or not similar programs crop up around the country.
"Mobile technology is the wave of the future, so you can either try to fight it or figure out ways to use it to the best advantage," Druin said.

Windows 8 News - Updating list of features to date

With screenshots and leaks galore — though, not on the scale of Windows 7’s post-Vista transformation — there is an ongoing stream of information coming out of the web, from ordinary bloggers to broadsheet newspapers, regarding the next-generation operating system.

This post will update as and when new features are discovered, and will include descriptions, any pertinent information and a picture in the corresponding screenshot gallery too, wherever possible.

Each new feature will be verified as accurately as possible. While none of the features here can be verified to one hundred percent, this updating feature set will allow both consumers and enterprises to gauge what may be coming next in the upcoming release, set for next year.

New Welcome screen

A new ‘Metro UI’ (the user interface for Windows Phone 7 devices) has been seen in the latest builds of Windows 8. Featuring the date and time, another video showed the leaked Windows 8 default wallpaper as discovered by fellow ZDNet colleague Stephens Chapman, where users are shown a list of users on the local machine to click on and enter their password.

‘Modern’ Task Manager

A new task manager emerged in one of the latest builds, redesigning how programs and system-critical applications are displayed. Frankly, for task manager veterans, the entire feel of the application has changed entirely. However, it is more in-tune with the look and feel of Windows 8, though devoid of a Ribbon bar — for now, at least. It also includes a more ‘advanced’ task manager for those who still require seeing extensive statistics of their hardware.

Portable Workspaces

One of the most highly anticipated features, discovered in an early build of Windows 8 — the portable workspace, allowing you to effectively put Windows on a USB stick. On the other hand, it looks more likely to become an enterprise only feature, and further limited to those with a USB stick or external hard drive that is at least 16GB in size. However, already this could give an early indication of the final hard drive memory footprint of the upcoming operating system.

Aero auto-colourisation

A new feature that reacts to the most prominent colour of the Windows wallpaper. This already exists under Windows 7, where the icons in the taskbar ‘reflect’ the brightest or most dominant colour in the icon. However, this will be ported to reflect the entire desktop, including Start menu and taskbar, depending on the colour of the wallpaper.

Hybrid Booting

Seen in the latest builds, Hybrid Boot is a cross between hibernation and sleep mode, and more of an evolution of the existing hibernation function. Core operating system files are ‘put to sleep’ which enables the startup time to be significantly reduced.

Simple system ‘reset’

Found in an early build of Windows 8, the functionality exists to allow a user or system administrator to ‘reset’ the operating system back to the default settings. As so many applications and settings are expected to be cloud based (see below), this would in theory allow you to get back up and running in minutes as opposed to hours. From the screenshots, it appears to be a quick and simple process, with user accounts and personal files kept in backup space, before your default Windows settings are restored.

The Ribbon bar features heavily in the Office 2007 and Office 2010 suite of applications, and since ported to Windows 7 in basic applications, from Wordpad to Paint. This was to open up the functionality to touch users, but will be capitalised upon further in Windows 8, as seen in recent builds leaked to the web. Seen already in Windows Explorer, it will be key to replacing the ‘old’ interface that Windows has had up until now.

Seen in the most recent builds of Windows 8, the Genuine Center will allow you to manage the license of Windows on your computer, and perhaps even control other Microsoft products, like Office too. If you have a computer not activated or without a product key, you will not only be able to buy one straight from your desktop, but also purchase a key for another machine, too.

Cloud-based roaming profiles

Roaming profiles have yet been semi-mythical, but have been uncovered over the last few days. Though it is not entirely clear in what form this will take — whether Windows Live Hp pavilion dv2200 battery Hp 510 battery Mesh will be integrated as part of the operating system, or whether it will be defined in another unknown fashion — it is clear that Windows 8 will allow your user settings and profile to be ‘cloudified’ to other machines.

Push notifications

‘Modern Reader’ PDF support

‘Modern Reader’ is the name of the PDF reading application designed and built using AppX technology, which bridge between the mobile and the desktop workspace gap. According to one, as the application packages are very similar to phone application packages, making applications easier to port across from the desktop to the mobile, including tablets.

Internet Explorer 10

SmartScreen file filter

Previously only seen in the Windows Live suite of products, SmartScreen filters out spam or bad links based on community responses. In Windows 8, however, an option has been seen to check files downloaded by a browser, not just Internet Explorer, to ensure that the download source is safe and verified. It simply adds an extra layer of security protection to the operating system.

Windows App Store

Likened to Apple’s App Store for iOS and Mac devices, Microsoft is set to include its own application web store in the next version of Windows. Dubbed the Windows App Store, unsurprisingly, it has yet to turn up in a leaked build, though screenshots seem to confirm its existence.

History Vault

This feature could be seen as the competing ‘product’ to the Time Machine in Mac OS X. Acting as a backup facility, it will replace the Backup and Restore feature in Windows 7 Hp pavilion dv6 battery Sony vgp-bps13 battery , while giving users the option to create regular, automatic backups. Users will be able to restore individual files from way back into the past, while offering a ‘new user interface’ similar to that of the Time Machine.

If you are even the least bit interested in technology you know that having lots of choice is good. In a new market choice leads to competition among makers, which leads into new aToshiba pa3534u-1brs battery dvancements in that given market.

Atari's Greatest Hits provides gamers of a certain age with a blast from the past. It also illustrates the practical limits of nostalgia.

The iOS game, which runs in optimized form on the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, features near perfect recreations of the Atari console and arcade games you probably wasted too much time and too many quarters on in the early 1980s. It's not that Atari's Greatest Hits doesn't do a fine job loving recreating games like Yars' Revenge or Haunted House. Every detail-the graphics, the sound, even the dog-eared manual with instructions for hooking up your Atari 2600 system-has been lovingly recreated. (You can also summon up the toggle-based controls of the console itself to switch between game modes and the like.) It's not exactly a smooth merging of styles. For one thing, the controls take up a third of the screen, which seems a particularly wasteful use of the iPad's real estate; for another, that joystick is not so easy to operate. The arcade-style games fare a little better-they're primarily button-driven, after all. But even controls like the trackball in Centipede don't feel as seamlessly implemented as they ought to be.

I can appreciate the developer's commitment to historical fidelity, but it seems like steps could have been taken to improve the gameplay. ipad New Function - Adobe to Stream Live Video to the iPad.

Adobe is demoing an update to its Flash Media Server at the National Association of Broadcasters show this week that will enable publishers to stream not just to Flash-enabled web and mobile browsers, but also devices like Samsung TVs, the Motorola Xoom tablet and Atrix smartphone — and even to Apple iOS devices like the iPad.

In a blog post earlier this week, Adobe product Dell latitude d830 battery Dell latitude d620 battery manager Kevin Towes showed off the new technology, including providing a demo video of a live video stream with outputs to the Safari browser on a Mac, as well as to an iPad 2 and Motorola Xoom tablet.

While the iPad has become an exciting new way for viewers to stream live and on-demand video, the device doesn’t support Adobe’s Flash format, which means much of today’s existing web video isn’t available for iPad users. Publishers that do want to reach iPad users have to re-encode those videos for HTML5 video playback — and if they want to take advantage of adaptive bit rate technology for live video, they have to format those streams to support Apple’s HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) protocol.

With Adobe’s Flash Media Live Encoder 4 and future version of Flash Media Server, the company is adding support for HLS. Doing so could enable a video publisher to support live streams to the iPad from the same streaming server it uses for streaming to web browsers and other devices. That could simplify the delivery infrastructure not just for publishers themselves, but also for CDNs and enterprises that rely on Flash Media Server to stream live events. As Towes explained in the blog post:

    “By adding support for HLS within the Flash Media Server Dell vostro 1500 battery Compaq nc6000 battery , Adobe is reducing the publishing complexity for broadcasters who need to reach browsers supporting HLS through HTML5 (such as Safari) or devices where Adobe Flash is not installed. Despite Apple’s insistence on keeping Flash off its iOS platforms, Adobe has been hard at work creating hooks that allow developers to use its creative tools to make Flash-based apps that also work on the iPhone and iPad. It also recently rolled out a content protection technology called Adobe Pass which enables companies interested in TV Everywhere services to authenticate users on web browsers and on mobile devices that don’t support Flash. Adobe doesn’t have an expected launch date for iOS/HLS support on its Flash Media Server, but the company will likely begin trialing the technology with media customers soon.
