Apple’s app store & Android - Google Streamlines Android Market

SAN FRANCISCO — Android’s explosive growth over the past three years has been a double-edged sword for its apps. On the plus side, there are more of them than ever — but on the negative side, there are more of them than ever.

Some think progressions like these are long overdue.

“These are features that Apple has had for years,” said industry analyst Michael Gartenberg, in an interview. “These sorts of features are table stakes at this point in the game.”

Indeed, Google’s Android Market web store, a version of the store that’s accessible through your computer’s browser, first debuted in February. In contrast, iPhone users have been able to access the App Store via web browser since February of 2010.

As Google tackles these problems, the market’s patronage continues to expand. Although historically the Android Market’s customer base has been focused on the U.S. and a handful of other countries, Google’s “Android developer ecosystem manager” Eric Chu says it’s important to pay attention to the burgeoning international market. Asus News - Asus Eee Pad Transformer TF101 Docking Station

A common knock on tablets, from the Apple iPad (4.5 stars, $499) on down, has been that they're designed for consumption, not creation. The line of reasoning goes something like this: Tablets are great for watching videos and basic Web browsing, but they're not as efficient for work as a keyboard-and-mouse combination.

Asus' response, it seems, was to give buyers of the Asus Eee Pad Transformer TF101 ($399, 3.5 stars) the best of both worlds. The Asus Eee Pad Transformer TF101 Docking Station ($149 list) snaps onto the bottom of the Transformer, and turns the tablet into a netbook, complete with mouse, keyboard, USB slots, card reader, Asus a32-f5 battery Asus a32-f3 battery  and more. It's a useful accessory that distinguishes the Transformer from other Honeycomb tablets, but the keyboard is small and takes some getting used to, and going back and forth between touch-screen and traditional inputs can be awkward.

Design

The Docking Station is made to look just like the Transformer itself: it's got the same dark, brownish-gray/metallic color scheme, and the same geometric pattern on the back. The consistency is nice, making the combination look like they're made for each other rather than two distinct products. At 6.9 by 10.7 by 0.6 inches (HWD), the Docking Station's dimensions are virtually identical to the Transformer. Unfortunately, at 1.37 pounds, it weighs nearly the same as well.

On the face of the Docking Station is a chiclet-style, netbook-sized QWERTY keyboard, a surprisingly large touchpad, and a the hinge where the tablet connects. There's a sliding silver lock switch, which snaps into place when the tablet is fully docked. Around the sides are two USB ports and an SD card slot, along with a space for the charger—the Docking Station has its own rechargeable battery inside, which Asus says will add up to 6.5 hours of battery life to the Transformer. The Transformation: Tablet to Laptop

The hardest thing about using the Docking Station is actually docking the Transformer. The slot that holds the tablet has raised sides to support the device, so it's hard to see the raised 40-pin connector that plugs into the Transformer. I was always afraid I'd break one of the two connectors, but, fortunately, I never did. The upside to the difficult docking process is that it's a super-secure connection. Once the Transformer is sitting in the Docking Station, it really does become indistinguishable from a netbook or laptop. It can fold in half like a laptop, and be carried in closed-clamshell mode. Using the Docking Station

Though a 92-percent-of-standard keyboard sounds big enough, the difference is stunning. If you've used a netbook for any length of time, however, this keyboard will feel immediately familiar.

The biggest advantage of the Docking Station over any other keyboard is that it's loaded with Honeycomb-specific keys. There's a dedicated Search button, lots of media and brightness buttons, a Back button, Lock and Unlock keys, and more. One thing I've never liked about the tablet/keyboard combination is the constant back-and-forth from screen to keyboard, and the Transformer Docking Station does away with a lot of that.

In fact, thanks to the addition of a trackpad, you really don't ever need to touch the screen. As soon as you dock the Transformer, a cursor pops up on the screen, and you use it as you would any other mouse. The touchpad is extremely responsive and fast, and even includes useful features like two-finger scrolling. This is a huge advantage over the iPad's keyboard dock accessory ($69, 3.5 stars), which has no trackpad. In fact, the iPad cannot be paired with any type of mouse, as the screen can only be operated by touch.

The Asus Eee Pad Transformer TF101 Docking Station really does make the Transformer into a capable laptop. Once you get used to the size of the keyboard, there's little you can't do with the device thanks to the included productivity software, Polaris Office. This weekend I was just casually browsing up and down the aisles at one of my local computer stores. All the usual  array of  promotional banners and offers were on, but there was one in particular that caught my eye. It was a Windows 7 banner, (no surprise there) but what caught my attention is that it was advertising Windows 7 as a “NEW” just released operating system. Of course it was followed with the usual “quicker, securer, etc..” marketing, but it got me thinking. If stores are stilladvertising Windows  7 as “new”, do we really need Windows 8 so soon?

Look at the enterprise scene too. For large enterprise’s it’s taking nearly 12 months to roll out Windows 7 and update their current systems. It’s costly and expensive for them to do it, generally you won’t find them updating again for at least another 5 years. If you look at it, Windows XP can still be found in many businesses, and that’s been on the go nearly 10 years now. Many of them haven’t even started the roll out yet, but plan on starting it during this year. They’ll have barely got Windows 7 running and staff trained by the timeWindows 8 comes out, do you think that they’re going to go through the costly upgrade and training process so soon? If they’ve any sense they wont.

Why Microsoft Buying RIM Wouldn't Make Sense - Top 3 Reasons

Microsoft (NSDQ:MSFT)'s Bing search engine and maps partnership with Research In Motion (NSDQ:RIMM) has sparked renewed speculation about a possible acquisition of the struggling Blackberry maker. But while such a deal makes sense on some levels, partners on both sides just don’t see it happening.

The Microsoft-RIM speculation is certainly understandable: RIM used to dominate enterprise mobility, but its market leadership position has been steadily shrinking. RIM's cycle of innovation has slowed in recent years and it's having a tough time attracting developers, in part due to the complexity of building apps for the Blackberry.
Meanwhile, Microsoft Dell inspiron b120 battery Dell inspiron 9400 battery is struggling for mobile relevancy despite the largely positive market reception to Windows Phone 7. Some industry watchers feel a RIM acquisition would catapult Microsoft back into a position of mobile relevancy while also saving RIM's bacon.

1. The Cultures Are Very Different

There's a reason why Blackberry World attendees gasped earlier this week when Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer appeared onstage: RIM and Microsoft have had a symbiotic relationship over the years but they're very different from a corporate culture perspective.

"RIM views themselves as innovators and free thinkers. They are known for being very arrogant and have a superiority complex when it comes to wireless technology," said one RIM partner, who requested anonymity.
"They also have strong nationalistic Canadian pride -- it would be a tremendous blow to their collective egos to have an American giant like Microsoft swallow them with cash on hand," the source added.

Steve Beauregard, president of Santa Monica, Calif.-based RIM partner Regard Solutions, also believes a RIM-Microsoft deal would be extremely illogical.

"Culturally, RIM and Microsoft Dell inspiron e1505 battery Hp 530 battery would clash worse than Sean Penn trying to marry Dr. Laura Schlessinger," said Beauregard. "RIM is known by carriers, partners and customers for dictating terms with little flexibility. Microsoft, on the other hand, was among the first to build a channel friendly eco-system of partners."

Microsoft isn't in the hardware business, nor does it want to be. That’s why the software giant is paying billions of dollars to Nokia to develop and promote Windows Phone 7.

Given Microsoft's disastrous experience with Danger, which cost $500 million to acquire and resulted in the widely ridiculed Kin devices, the Nokia (NYSE:NOK) deal likely represents the limit of its mobile hardware ambitions.

Then there's the question of what RIM assets Microsoft could even want. "I don’t see any RIM technology that Microsoft desperately needs, and buying market share in the mobile business is very problematic since market share can change in a flash," said Allen Nogee, an analyst with In-Stat in Scottsdale, Ariz.

3. Development And Technology Clashes

RIM's BlackBerry architecture is based on Java but the company is now in the process of moving to the Unix-based QNX, which powers the Playbook tablet Hp dv6000 battery Dell latitude e6400 battery . Microsoft moved away from Java after Sun sued it back in 2002, so there seem to be a lack of development synergies to justify an acquisition.

In light of RIM's struggles with the governments of India and several Middle Eastern governments over Blackberry encryption, a Microsoft acquisition of RIM would also likely complicate those situations.
Another factor: In RIM's e-mail solution, the NOCs have access to e-mail for various countries, so those countries would have to feel comfortable with such an acquisition," said Chris De Herrera, a Los Angeles-based Windows Mobile MVP and editor of the Pocket PC FAQ .

There are other areas where Microsoft's and RIM's views differ technologically: NOC based e-mail architecture also goes against Microsoft’s philosophy about having the Exchange Server communicate directly, according to De Herrera.

"Microsoft generally does not support integration with third party solutions, and when they do so, they do it for as short a time as possible. RIM is integrating with Lotus Notes as an example of the kind of clash," said De Herrera.

New Smartphone Technology - Will "PaperPhone" become Cellphone of the Future?

Tired of cracking the glass on your smartphone screen? Or carrying around the extra weight in your pocket?
A team of computer researchers believes those problems will soon be history, as your future cellphone will be as thin, light and flexible as a sheet of paper.

At a computing Toshiba pa3534u-1brs battery conference next week, Roel Vertegaal, associate professor of computer science and director of the Human Media Lab at Queen's University in Ontario, Canada, will officially unveil the "PaperPhone."

Developed with help from researchers at Arizona State University, the prototype of what the researchers call a "flexible iPhone" is made of super-thin, ultra-light bendable film, but makes calls, stores books and plays music.
"This is not a maybe. This is a definite," said Vertegaal. "This is what your phone will look like."

Like Amazon's Kindle e-reader, the PaperPhoneAcer aspire 5920 battery Dell latitude d531 battery  uses electronic ink to display content. But instead of using glass, the PaperPhone relies on high-tech bendable plastic material developed at ASU's Flexible Display Center.

The futuristic phone is about as thin as a credit card (but more flexible), less than one-sixth the weight of an iPhone 4 and has a 3.7-inch diagonal screen.

Not only is it easy to hold, Vertegaal said, the durable material is better for the environment.

"It's very robust -- you can hit it with a hammer," he said. And, "it uses less electricity."

Instead of pushing buttons, Vertegaal said, people could bend the phone for navigation -- bending down both sides of the phone could open up an application, dog-earing the top right corner could scroll forward.
Touchscreen will still likely be the dominant way of interacting with the phone, he said, but it will need considerable refinement.

The Next iPhone? Interactive Flexible Displays Still Present Research Challenges

For example, while they developed a flexible circuit board to enable the bend gesture control and can use flexible batteries, the processor, cable and other rigid electronics are currently just attached as an extra handle to the phone.

And then there's the price -- the current PaperPhone prototype cost $7,000-$10,000 to make, he said.

But Vertegaal emphasized that the point of the prototype is to demonstrate the possibility and the different ways of interacting with a smartphone or computer, not necessarily make a commercially viable product... yet.

In the next five to 10 years, he said he believes that the flexible interactive display will move from the lab to the mainstream, as smaller smartphones, computing devices and readers.

"This is definitely going to replace the iPhone , there's no doubt about that," he said. "But it only happens when Apple thinks it can make a profit."

Once someone greenlights high-volume manufacturing of the devices, Vertegaal said, he thinks the price could fall from the multi-thousand-dollar range to a cost more palatable for mainstream consumers.

Greg Harper, president of technology consulting firm HarperVision, said that while no one has yet introduced a flexible smartphone ready for public consumption, the creators of the PaperPhone are not the first to toy with an interactive flexible digital ink display. Private companies are working on similar computing devices and the Mountain View, Calif.-based Plastic Logic has a flexible display ereader that is reportedly ready, but has not yet been released because of competition, Harper said.

Researchers -- both public and private -- may understand the challenges involving the display, touch and assembling the components, but successful execution is another matter, he said.

Still, Harper added, flexible devices are indeed on their way, though be believes it won't necessarily be in the magnitude Vertegaal predicts.

"I don't think it's the future of [smartphones], but I think it will be a component of it," he said. "It will be there but there is still work to be done."

Apple's iPad could prove to be a must-have tool for colleges around the country, a new study from Oklahoma State University has found.

Students also benefited greatly from Apple's App Store, OSU found. They were able to find "thousands of educational software possibilities" in the App Store to help complement Web-based tools they employed. Students also used Apple's tablet as a "substitute for paper and pen."

The iPad's touch-based functionality has proven useful in other educational institutions around the U.S., as well. When OSU drilled down into the results a bit, it found that 92.8 percent of Mac owners believed the iPad helped them in their coursework, while 70.4 percent of those who owned a PC believed the same. Just 3 percent of students would opt out of a course that would require the use of Apple's iPad.

"We put this powerful and creative tool in the hands of faculty and students and the end result reached beyond enhancing the academic experience of our students," OSU President Burns Hargis said in a statement. "The report outlines a possible decrease to student and administrative expenses, increased productivity, and how the iPad crosses between academic and personal barriers."

Given all those benefits, both professors who used the iPad in their classes recommended that OSU roll out the tablet across the university.
