Fixing those cracks and other battery problems “could help us make longer-lasting batteries,” White told Science News. White is an engineer at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
The new device is a type of lithium-ion battery. These popular, rechargeable batteries are used in small electronics. They may also power electric cars one day. A lithium-ion battery has three basic parts. At one end is the cathode, which has a positive electric charge. At the other end is an anode, which is negatively charged. A liquid called an electrolyte carries charges between the cathode and the anode. In lithium-ion batteries, the electrolyte contains atoms of lithium that have positive charges. These charged atoms are called ions.
White and his colleagues knew that tiny cracks, which can often form in the anode, can block the electric current and eventually kill a battery. To combat the cracks, the scientists added a little something extra into the anode: tiny plastic bubbles, or spheres, filled with a material called gallium indium. When the anode develops tiny cracks, some of these bubbles break open and spill the gallium indium. The scientists say this idea can also be used to build safer batteries. Damaged lithium-ion batteries have been known to overheat and catch on fire.
“It’s not a common occurrence, but when it happens, the consequences are severe,” White told Science News.

We briefly mentioned this morning the announcement of the HTC Flyer, which we will cover in more detail once we have taken a look at the specs. However, having just glanced over what features the new tablet will have, we seemed to have found an issue with not only the battery but with Android 2.4 as well.

The launch of this tablet has been a long time coming; we have to wonder what has taken HTC so long, especially when they gave us the G1 – the first Google Android smartphone. There are other Android tablets coming to market, but Pocket-lint thought it only fair to put it alongside the current dominant tablet, the iPad.

Reading out the Union Budget of 2011-12, finance minister Pranab Mukherjee said that the full exemption from basic customs duty and a concessional rate of central excise duty of 4 per cent for specified parts of electric vehicles that was announced in the last budget would be extended to batteries imported by manufacturers.

Jaisukh Patel, promoter of Ajanta Group that makes the Oreva brand of electric bikes felt that the move would definitely push the demand for e-bikes. He, however, felt that the longterm move should be towards indigenous manufacturing of electric batteries. Currently, no battery manufacturer delves into this segment as the volumes are low. Apple today announced a refresh of its MacBook Pro line of laptops. The highlights? New, faster processors, more powerful graphics processors, an HD camera and a new port for a technology that Apple is calling Thunderbolt.
Cosmetically, the new Pros look very similar to their predecessors. One of the new features of the Intel chips is an integrated graphics processor. But in the 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pros, Apple doubled down on graphics by adding a discrete AMD Radeon graphics chip. Models with both chips seamlessly and automatically switch between the two processors, depending on performance needs.
There is also a new FaceTime camera, which can stream video in 720p resolution and display it in a new widescreen format.

It’s the last addition to the MacBook Pro line that is perhaps the most intriguing: the Thunderbolt port. Apple collaborated with Intel on its Light Peak project to create a new high-speed data and display port that would be adaptable to existing connection standards. The MacBook Pros are the first computers to feature the technology, but it will roll out across manufacturers next year.
The performance specs of Thunderbolt are striking: At 10 Gbps, it’s twice as fast as USB 3.0, 12 times as fast as FireWire 800 and 20 times faster than USB 2.0. As Intel calculated in their press release, a Thunderbolt connection can transfer a full-length high-definition movie in 30 seconds.
Thunderbolt is also a native Mini DisplayPort, so any display with that connection can hook up easily. HDMI, DVI, DisplayPort and VGA displays can use adapters. Thunderbolt also provides up to 10 watts of power to peripherals and can be daisy-chained to up to six peripherals.
