GE plans big solar factory – the largest U.S. solar panel factory

GE plans big solar factory post by goodlaptopbattery.co.uk
General Electric said Thursday that it is planning to build what will be the largest U.S. solar panel factory, but it’s unclear whether Michigan is one of the sites under consideration for the new plant.
The proposed facility would produce thin-film solar panels developed by PrimeStar Solar, a five-year-old company in Arvada, Colo., that GE has acquired. The plant would employ 400 workers and manufacture enough panels to power 80,000 homes a year. The company said the panels have set a new record for efficiency.
“Multiple locations are being considered for the new facility, with the final location to be announced shortly,” GE said in a statement.
A GE spokesman did not respond to requests seeking comment Thursday.
In a statement, Michael Finney, CEO of the Michigan Economic Development Corp., said, “We have a strong and longstanding relationship with GE and were successful in bringing their advanced manufacturing and software technology center to Van Buren Township. As a matter of policy, we do not publicly discuss new  projects that we may or may not be pursuing with the company.”
PrimeStar operates an equipment center in Montague, north of Muskegon. GE has owned a Discount Dell studio 1555 battery Dell vostro 1500 battery stake in the start-up firm since September 2007.
In recent years, Michigan has worked to form a solar power industry hub in Saginaw by offering generous tax and other incentives to lure manufacturers. However, Gov. Rick Snyder’s budget proposal calls for sharply reducing the amount of tax credits offered to businesses.
GE is no stranger to Michigan. In October 2009, it opened an advanced manufacturing and software technology center in Van Buren Township. The center develops software, processes and technologies for the company’s manufacturing operations.

The center employs 600 people, 90% of them from Michigan, said GE spokeswoman Deia Campanelli. The center expects to grow to more than 1,100 employees by 2013. It will house GE’s largest concentration of information technology professionals worldwide.
Michigan is home to four thin-film solar panel factories in Auburn Hills and Greenville that are owned by Energy Conversion Devices. However, the Auburn Hills company, which has received state tax breaks, has struggled in recent years amid increased competition.

World's biggest electric car battery plant had finishes by LG Chem

The Dong-A Ilbo - LG Chem said Wednesday that it has completed what it described as the world`s largest battery plant for electric cars, with an annual production capacity of around 100,000 units.

The plant began producing batteries Dell d630 battery Acer as07b31 battery for General Motors' electric vehicle Chevrolet Volt in September last year.
With two additional plants being built in Ochang, Korea and another in Michigan, the U.S., LG Chem will become capable of producing enough batteries to supply up to 350,000 cars a year starting in 2013.

By developing its Ochang plant into a global key battery factory for electric vehicles, LG Chem aims to increase its global market share in the electric car battery sector to more than 25 percent to post 4 trillion won (3.7 billion U.S. dollars) in sales by 2015.

LG Chem began leading the world electric car battery market in January 2009, when it started to develop lithium-ion batteries. Nickel-hydride batteries Dell inspiron 6400 battery Dell inspiron 1520 battery led by Japanese companies had been the main power source for electric cars until then.

LG Chem’s lithium-ion batteries are smaller and lighter than Japan`s nickel-hydride batteries and have 50 percent more output and energy.

LG Chem has secured 10 global and domestic automakers as clients, including GM, Hyundai Motor, Volvo, Ford and Renault. It is also expecting demand from two to three Japanese carmakers.

LG Chem Vice Chairman Kim Bahn-suk said, "Two of our main client companies asked us to supply 100 percent and 50 percent more batteries than they initially demanded. We initially didn`t expect annual battery production capacity of up to 100,000 cars, and have built more plants to meet rising demand."

Attending the ceremony were President Lee Myung-bak, LG Group Chairman Koo Bon-moo, and Hyundai Motor Vice Chairman Chung Suk-soo and Vice President Oh Seung-kook. GM Vice Chairman Stephen Girsky, Renault Vice President Alain Vignaud, Renault Samsung CEO Jean-Marie Hurtiger and Ford Executive Director Burt Jordan were among the executives from major foreign automakers at the ceremony.

In his congratulatory speech for the launch of LG Chem’s plant, President Lee said, "The era of electric cars will come faster than we initially expected. An engine era will come to an end if batteries become lighter. Korean companies started a bit late but have become pioneers with a spirit of challenge and investment."

GM Vice Chairman Steve Girsky said, "Cooperation between General Motors and LG Chem will not remain with Volt. We will use LG Chem’s batteries in the Chevrolet Cruze (GM

Daewoo Lacetti Premier) and test how well they sell in Korea."

Motorola Xoom Flounders & Apple iPad 2 Sales Soar

Taiwanese newspaper DigiTimes is reporting that iPad 2 sales have reached 2.4-2.6 million in its first month based on sources at upstream touch panel suppliers in Taiwan. This comes despite supply issues concerning the availability of cover lenses for the Apple tablet’s touch-screen modules following the Japan earthquake last month. The anonymous contact also offered DigiTimes a “conservative” estimate that Apple will deliver as many as 4.3 million tablets a month, 12 million units in total. This news comes within hours of a report by Business Insider stating that analysts at Deutsche Bank have determined that Motorola Mobility has sold only 100,000 Motorola Xoom tablets during its first two months.

Forbes reported yesterday that Pacific Crest analyst James Faucette said that channel checks have found that sell-through trends for both the Xoom tablet as well as the Motorola Atrix smart phone have, “been disappointing.” This is understandable, given the fact that iPad 2 sales on the first day alone topped 300,000, and during its first week sales are estimated at being between 350,000 and 400,000. And while few expected that Google’s first real response to the iPad would match its competition despite the fact that it has for the most part received positive reviews from critics including Skatter Tech, these numbers are unquestionably dismal and do not bode well for the Android 3.0 Honeycomb powered tablet’s future as an iPad rival.

Apple has not released an official statement regarding the iPad 2 sales, although they likely will do so on April 20 when the company has its scheduled Q2 earnings call. Motorola has understandably also remained mum on the subject and as of now has yet to release the official Xoom sales figures.

Google +1, Would you use it ?

Google announced this morning that it is taking the inclusion of social recommendations in its search results a step further with the introduction of the long-awaited Google +1. The new feature puts a "+1" icon next to each search result, allowing users to recommend certain results and websites directly from Google, rather than on Twitter or Facebook.

Google calls the feature "digital shorthand for 'this is pretty cool'," but we have to wonder - who are you telling and why?

So let's look at what this new feature does - it allows users to recommend search results and ads to their friends or people in their social circle. Right now, however, the feature will only show up as a button next to each search result, as seen below:

Soon enough, writes Search Engine Land's Danny Sullivan, Google will offer stand-alone +1 buttons for websites to put right next to its Twitter and Facebook sharing buttons, which makes way more sense. Who wants to share a search Dell inspiron 6400 battery Dell latitude e6500 battery result before they ever click on the link to begin with? And would you actually back out of the site simply to click the +1 to share? Sullivan also notes that everything you +1 will be completely public and part of your redesigned Google profile.

Google Goes Social: But Why?

For months now, we've been waiting to see what's next with Google's much-rumored social initiative. We first heard rumors of this effort early last summer, when the project was supposedly called "Google Me" and was surely the next "Facebook Killer." Since then, Google bought Slide for $182 million, saying that it would help make its services "socially aware," and publicly denounced the idea of a stand-alone social network to take on Facebook.

With today's announcement (and recent introductions of things like the Google Toolbar and redesigned user profiles), we see the first rumblings of Google's social effort and they again appear to be unfortunately misguided.

Let's look ahead to the future though - Google has released the button for inclusion on websites, you can see all these +1s on your Google profile, but again - what is your motivation for clicking +1? So your friends have a better search Dell inspiron 1000 battery Dell latitude d531 battery experience? Is this actually something you care about?

With last month's inclusion of social sharing cues in search results, Google had the right idea. Users already share on Twitter, Facebook and otherwise for a variety of reasons. But the main reason they share there is to share, not to recommend the validity of a link in case someone searches for something similar.

As LifeHacker founding editor and ExpertLabs project director Gina Trapani tweeted upon hearing the news, "I don't see myself curating search results much. By the time I know a result is good, I've left. What about you?"

Tech blogger Louis Gray argues that the +1 feature is for much more than just search results, pointing to the new +1 tab on Google profiles. "The +1 data is also closely tied to your Google Profile, which is a sibling to Google Buzz, which also has following and friend-like attributes," writes Gray.

Simply providing a place for these +1 links Dell precision m6400 battery to be aggregated still doesn't give me a reason to click the button. I already have bookmarks. I already have ways to socially share with my friends. So what gives?

While we surely haven't heard the last of Google and its social effort, we have to wonder if we have another SearchWiki on our hands. Including social cues in search results seemed like a natural progression of search, but that kept the idea of intention out of the mix. People were already sharing using Twitter. This, on the other hand, brings the user's intention for sharing in the first place into the mix and confuses matters. What do you think? Will Google offer a compelling reason to click that +1 button or is Tweeting and Liking enough for you? Can your Google profile ever become central enough to your online identity that +1 will feel like a social experience?

10 Reasons Why Firefox 4 Still Can't Beat Google Chrome

With the release of Firefox 4 Beta 1, Mozilla is preparing to once again take on Google's Chrome, Opera Software's Opera and Microsoft's Internet Explorer. The company finds itself in a good position. As the world's second-most popular browser, Firefox is poised to continue its growth and eventually supplant Internet Explorer as the top program in the space.

Of course, achieving that goal could be more difficult than ever. Google Chrome is gaining market share at a rapid rate, thanks to the browser's ability to load Web pages far more quickly than the competition. Even Internet Explorer gained a little share in June, even though Microsoft is forced to give European Windows users their choice of browsers. Simply put, the market is heating up.

But it's Chrome that may be Mozilla's biggest competition in the browser market. It's quickly gaining ground, and it arguably delivers the best experience of any browser on the market. And even though Firefox 4 is still at the beta stage, and the final release is potentially far off, one thing is clear: Chrome continues to reign supreme as the browser with the best design and performance. Let's examine why Google Chrome is still better than Firefox 4.

    1. Firefox loads too slowly

A major problem with Firefox in the past has been that it starts up too slowly compared with other browsers. Mozilla obviously realized that and did a fine job, at least in Windows 7, of making Firefox 4 load far more quickly. But it's still too slow when compared with Chrome. It's not necessarily a deal-breaker—the difference is about 1 or 2 seconds—but it's noticeable enough for some users who require zippy actions to opt for Chrome over Mozilla's product.

    2. Browsing is still slow

A browser's ability to load pages will determine which software people will use on a regular basis to surf the Web. When comparing Firefox 4 with Chrome, it quickly becomes apparent that the latter browser does a much better job of loading pages. In some cases, large, detailed pages load nearly twice as fast in Chrome than in Firefox. Mozilla's latest browser beta is admittedly much faster than its predecessor, but until Firefox does a better job of quickly loading pages, most folks will likely opt for Google's browser.

    3. A multicapable address bar is missing

One of the key components in Chrome is the ability to use its address bar both for search and for typing in a URL. In Firefox 4, the functionality is similar. Users can type a URL into the address bar and go to the desired site, or they can type in a search query and get the first site listed in Google search results. That's certainly better than nothing, but it would be nice if the address bar doubled as a true search field, rather than being flanked by a search bar. It's not necessarily an annoyance, but it's just another example of Chrome doing a slightly better job than Mozilla's latest browser.

    4. The design feels nice, but borrowed

A quick comparison between previous versions of Firefox and the new iteration of the browser shows just how far Firefox 4 has come in design. It's a much nicer browser that longtime Firefox fans will like. But further inspection reveals that it looks awfully similar to Chrome on Windows 7. Not only has Mozilla consolidated menus, as Chrome did, but Firefox has also taken on a similar skin to Chrome. It's not necessarily a bad thing, since Chrome is so well-designed, but it seems rather unfortunate that Mozilla couldn't come up with something a little more unique to challenge Google's browser with.

    5. Ease of use is gone

Firefox won a lot of converts because of its ease of use. In previous versions of the software, folks could easily access menus, find bookmarks and generally enjoy the efficiency of the application. In fact, Firefox was arguably better than Chrome in terms of usability. But all that has changed. Firefox 4 has jumbled menus that aren't broken out any longer. Chrome users will feel right at home, but those who enjoy having easy access to top-level menus will find Firefox 4 shocking at first glance. Firefox 4 just isn't as easy to use as earlier versions were. And that's unfortunate.

    6. Moving tabs is a pain

It might be a small issue, but the way tabs are moved in Firefox 4 needs to be improved before the software's final build is made public. In Chrome, moving a tab is a simple matter of dragging it from one place to another. Along the way, the other tabs shift, and it's easy to see where the tab is going. But in Firefox 4, that isn't the case. The browser's tabs don't move as a page is dragged across the bar, and the only help given to the user is a simple blue arrow that is too difficult to see in Windows 7. It's nice to be able to move tabs, but if the functionality isn't smooth, it will be frustrating to users.

    7. The design lacks intuitiveness

One of the main problems with Firefox 4 is that its new design lacks the kind of intuitive design that users are looking for. There is a prominent address bar and the search box is still to the right of it, but with different options hidden both at the upper left of the page and to the right of the search box, too much moving around and clicking is required to find the features users really want. It seems that rather than develop a design that understands what people want to do with a browser and helps them do it more efficiently, Mozilla decided to lump everything together into a couple of menus. It's unfortunate. An intuitive design is central to a browser's success or failure. And Firefox 4 doesn't have that.

    8. HTML5 is nice, but expected

The addition of HTML5 support in Firefox 4 could be the browser's most desired new feature. Users will now be able to view content in the new standard no matter where they go on the Web. But excitement over the addition of HTML5 seems rather overblown. Yes, it's nice to have the standard Apple supports, but its inclusion seems like an obvious move on the part of a company that's trying to keep up with changing Web platforms. Firefox 4 was forced to support HTML5, considering that much of the competition already accommodates it in one form or another. It's nice to have it, but let's not get too excited about it.

    9. It's simple—to a point

Throughout the process of using Firefox 4, one issue continued to pop up: The browser is far simpler than previous versions in some areas, but in others, it's far more complicated. In other words, Firefox 4 is very much a tradeoff experience. On the one hand, thanks to its prominent address bar and useful search bar, it's simple and a viable alternative to Chrome. But when trying to, say, look at a page source or just view saved bookmarks, it becomes far more complicated than it needs to be. This is a major design flaw that should be addressed in the final build.

    10. Future potential

When it comes time to compare one browser with another, future potential must be considered. Although there is a lot of upside to Mozilla's Firefox 4, and it provides a great starting point for even better versions of the application in the future, Chrome has the most potential of any browser on the market. Not only will the software play a key role in Chrome OS, but it's fast, it's well-designed and there are several things Google can do to improve the browser far beyond any other program on the market. If future potential is a component in deciding which browser is better, Chrome wins.
