Android Phone tracking positions - Google representatives declined to comment on the lawsuit

Two Android owners are suing Google over location data collected by their devices, a week after Apple was named in a lawsuit over its iPhone logging similar data.

Two residents of Oakland County in Michigan filed a complaint in federal court in Detroit on April 27, alleging that their HTC Inspire 4G phones Dell latitude e6500 battery Hp 530 battery , which use Google’s Android OS, track their whereabouts "just as if by a tracking device for which a court-ordered warrant would ordinarily be required."
They are seeking $50 million in damages.

The possible class action also further would require Google to stop tracking positions, a request that could require Google to significantly overhaul Android. Their complaint argues that the tracking of Android owners' location "puts users at serious risk of privacy invasions, including stalking."

Google representatives declined to comment on the lawsuit.

The suit is the latest development in an outcry that has been brewing since two researchers discovered that Apple's popular iPhones Hp 6735b battery Hp dv6000 battery and iPads had been storing up to one year's worth of unencrypted data. The matter has gained steam with lawmakers and consumers, and now companies like Google and Apple face escalating scrutiny over the collection of data on devices.

Apple itself also faces a lawsuit, filed last week, over this collected data. The complaint also seeks class action status and accuses Apple of violating privacy laws and the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act by keeping a log of user locations without offering users a way to disable the data collection.

The company said on Wednesday that it will fix what it called a "mistake" with a software update, and will no longer store the data on phones for more than seven days, will encrypt the data and will stop backing up the files to user computers.

  • While the lawsuits on the horizon, the matter of privacy and data collection on mobile devices promises to remain on the radar for some time to come. In addition to the lawsuits, lawmakers are looking into a Federal Trade Commission probe on the matter. Apple and Google will also have to answer questions at a Congressional hearing on May 10.

If the issue of collecting data on mobile devices was little understood until now, consumers will have plenty of opportunity to get up to speed, especially as U.S. lawmakers keep their eye fixed on the matter.

Microsoft's Internet Explorer 9 Now is the Safest Web Browser

Microsoft's Internet Explorer 9 comes with an advanced security feature that makes it much safer than other Web browsers, including Google Chrome, according to a computer researcher.

Internet Explorer has long been a favorite target of cybercriminals; security holes are regularly found in older versions of the popular browser, leaving it easily exploitable for a number of different attacks.

But with the March 14 release of IE9 hp 530 battery Dell wr050 battery , Microsoft may have finally gotten things right, Ed Bott of the security website ZDNet says.

    Better filters for bad files

Bott cites IE9's SmartScreen filters, which run Web pages containing suspicious downloadable attachments through a database of all known programs and websites. If the page or the attachment doesn't check out, IE 9 won't let you even view it, let alone be tricked into downloading a rigged file.

"The algorithm assumes that a file — signed or unsigned — is untrustworthy until it establishes a reputation," Bott wrote. "No domain or file gets a free pass."

It's a "guilty until proven innocent" approach, and it's working for IE9 — Microsoft wrote on its Internet Explorer blog that only about seven percent of all executable files downloaded by IE were later confirmed as malicious.

The same, Bott contends Dell vostro 1500 battery Dell vostro 1700 battery , can't be said for Google Chrome.

Chrome is in the hot seat

Chrome has become an attractive target for online criminals lately because many savvy computer users regard IE as insecure.  Chrome is perceived to be safer, and its users think they're less susceptible to malware attacks, Bott suggested.

Also, because Chrome users represent a much smaller market than IE9 users, malware authors tend to not waste their time creating scams for the relatively small group.

But that trend is shifting; the SpyEye and Zeus trojans, notorious for infecting computers to steal banking credentials, have recently been targeting Chrome and the even less-used browser Opera and staying away from IE, Brian Krebs noted in his Krebs on Security blog.

With criminals migrating to Chrome, Bott says Chrome's filters, and its entire approach to protecting users, isn’t as airtight as IE9's — or even as secure as its advocates believe.

Whereas IE9 Acer aspire 5920 battery Acer aspire 5520 battery automatically blocks pages with suspicious attachments, Chrome allows users to save the file, and then choose to download it later.

But as many cybercrime ploys use social engineering tactics to make corrupt pages look legitimate, Bott said, "if the social engineering did its job, that means that a significant number of people are going to choose wrong."

    Bye-bye to drive-by

In one instance, Bott came across a spoofed warning designed by hackers to look just like Google Chrome's genuine warning page.

    Hp elitebook 8530w battery

The message on the warning read, "This type of file can harm your computer," and contained a corrupted attachment titled, "InstallInternetProtect.exe."

But that was just what was on the surface: Bott said in many cases, rogue Web pages can slip through Chrome's filters and infect users when they land on the page, a tactic called "drive-by downloads."

Having a security feature that automatically assumes the worst about a Web page, as IE9 does, might be in fact the best practice.

IE9 is currently available for Windows Vista or Windows 7; it will not run on Windows XP.

Apple Review - Apple denies tracking iPhone and iPad users by batterylaptoppower

The company says it has discovered bugs that resulted in too much location data being kept on the devices. Data are of nearby cellular towers and Wi-Fi access points, it says, not users' whereabouts.
Breaking nearly a week of silence to respond to a mounting outcry, Apple Inc. denied that it was tracking iPhone and iPad users but said that it had discovered bugs that resulted in too much location data being kept on the devices.

The company said that the controversy resulted in part because users had become "confused" by the technical Compaq tc4200 battery Compaq nc6000 battery complexity of the issue, and that the devices store geographical data in order to provide location-based services, such as map directions.

The locations stored by the iPhone and iPad are not a log of users' whereabouts, the company said Wednesday, but a database of nearby cellular towers and Wi-Fi access points that Apple already knows about. The devices can use that location data to, for example, calculate driving directions and offer coupons to local stores.

To tamp down the rising concerns, Apple even enlisted Steve Jobs, the company's chief executive who is currently on medical leave, to answer questions about the data collection. Jobs told the Wall Street Journal that the company was not tracking anyone and that an upcoming software update would reduce the amount of location data on the devices to about seven days' worth from as much as a year.

"Providing mobile Compaq pavilion dv6 battery toshiba Pa3534u-1bas battery users with fast and accurate location information while preserving their security and privacy has raised some very complex technical issues which are hard to communicate in a sound bite," the company said in a statement. "Users are confused, partly because the creators of this new technology (including Apple) have not provided enough education about these issues to date."

Apple's response came amid growing concern from a number of U.S. and foreign government officials as well as privacy advocates about the nature of the location data file. Rep . Ed Markey (D-Mass), who had asked the company to explain the location data last week, said in a statement Wednesday that he was pleased Apple was addressing the issue but signaled that he had questions about whether the company used the data to sell advertising to users.

Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.), who had also sent a letter to Apple about the location tracking, has called for Apple and Google Inc. to attend a Senate subcommittee hearing on mobile privacy to be held May 10. Jobs said Apple would be present for the hearing.

Google has also been pressed to explain how and why its Android-based smartphones collect, store and transmit user location data.

Kevin Bankston, a senior attorney at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, an online civil liberties group, praised Apple Compaq pavilion dv6000 battery Lenovo 3000 v200 battery for taking steps to reduce the amount of personal data on the phone but said consumer technology companies should be more upfront with their users about the data they collect.

"We shouldn't have to be in a constant battle with companies where the public is continually uncovering new privacy problems that the companies were opaque about before," Bankston said.

Apple emphasized that the data stored on the phone are not a user's exact real-time location, but an amalgam of Wi-Fi access points and cell tower locations "which can be more than 100 miles away from the iPhone."
The company, however, did not highlight that many Wi-Fi access points can be much closer, including in specific rooms in users' homes and offices. And as cellular networks have become larger and more sophisticated, companies have built many more towers so that each one can cover a smaller area more effectively.

Experts have said that Wi-Fi and cell-tower location data may soon be as specific as the highly precise GPS satellite data.

Apple said it would fix two issues with the way the data were stored, each of which it called a "bug." Those fixes would come in the next few weeks, the company said, and would include shortening the list of stored locations and enabling users to prevent the devices from keeping them in the first place.

Apple reviews : Apple iPhone tracking controversy

Could the kerfuffle over Apple iPhones tracking customer's exact locations be decided in a courtroom in Tampa?

One of the many cases Apple will most likely face has now been filed in federal court in Tampa in United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida.

The suit seeks to create a class-action of affected customers, and initially names an Apple iPhone customer in Tampa, Vikram Ajjampur, and an Apple Dell vostro 1520 battery Dell d630 battery customer in New York state, William Devito, who owns an Apple iPad.

Ajjampur could not be reached for comment, though his attorneys describe him as an aggrieved technology engineer.

Apple iPhones have long tracked its location for a variety of reasons, partly so customers can use location-based maps, coupon generators and restaurant recommendations, as well as a service to help customers find phones they lost.

The lawsuit filed in Tampa broadly claims that Apple violated customer's privacy, as well as a slew of rules, certain state or federal laws. And since Apple devices keep an unencrypted copy of that log, the suit says Apple benefits from the value of that data.

Other security consultants have found that Apple iPhones Hp 510 battery Hp 6735b battery and iPads keep a running log of customer locations, even if customers turn off the location service on their device settings. Apple has not officially commented on the location issue.

The suit broadly quotes a series of news articles on the Apple privacy issue. "It is unconscionable," the suit claims, "to allow Apple to continue unlawfully and without proper consent tracking Plaintiffs and proposed Class members. If Apple wanted to track the whereabouts of each of its products' users, it should have obtained specific, particularized informed consent such that Apple consumers across America would not have been shocked and alarmed to learn of Apple's practices in recent days."

The suit notes customers carry their iPhones and iPads "to essentially every location they travel to, making the information collected by Apple highly personal; indeed, in many instances it may be information to which employers and spouses are not privy.

The lawyer filing the suit, Charleston, S.C.-based Aaron Mayer, said he was initially contacted by several iPhone users who were shocked that their location was being tracked.

Even if customers clicked "I accept" on a terms and conditions page in Apple software, that contract has lost much of its meaning, Mayer said, as it now stretches to hundreds of pages.

His firm has recently filed several consumer-related suits against companies like Kraft regarding the nutrition content and claims of their foods.

The next frontier in business computing - Microsoft Brings Xbox Kinect To Windows PCs

Hands-free apps, for industries like healthcare and engineering, could be the next frontier in business computing.

In an effort to breathe new life into the faltering PC market, which in recent months has lost ground to buzzworthy gadgets like tablets and smartphones, Microsoft on Monday said it plans to release software that will enable developers to create Kinect-compatible apps that can run on Windows-based desktops and laptops Asus a42-w1 battery Asus a32-f3 battery .

Kinect is a system Microsoft originally developed for its Xbox video game console. It allows players to interact with games through physical gestures that are picked up by Kinect's wide array of sound and motion sensors and translated into the equivalent of controller commands.

The system has proven so popular it was recently declared the fastest selling tech gadget of all time by Guinness Records. But Microsoft said the Compaq pavilion dv6 battery technology's potential goes well beyond games and entertainment.

"When we first saw the Kinect it became completely obvious that what we wanted to do was control the universe with our fingertips," said Curtis Wong, a principal researcher at Microsoft Research, in a video posted to the company's Web site.

Virtual desktop infrastructure is one of the hottest virtualization trends today. Buy why?

Review the major benefits of VDI now.

Indeed, Microsoft believes hands-free computing will gain a foothold in a number of key industries, including education, engineering, and healthcare. One usage scenario: physicians could remotely manipulate surgical equipment positioned in battlefields, disaster sites, or other areas that may be inaccessible. On a more pedestrian level, business users could open and manipulate desktop files with a few simple hand gestures.

"We believe that Kinect can be more than just a great platform for gaming and entertainment," Microsoft said in a statement. "It opens up enormous opportunities that span everything from delivering new personal experiences to addressing societal challenges in the fields of healthcare and education."

The technology has its skeptics, however. Andrew Binstock Hp dv2000 battery Hp dv6000 battery , executive editor of Dr. Dobb's.com (an InformationWeek sister publication), said it could be years before Kinect-style apps show up in the sorts of scenarios Microsoft envisions or in general business use.

"I expect this SDK has more importance for gaming, sporting and recreation, and scientific communities, where the ability to respond to whole body movements has immediate application. Eventually, I expect commercial applications will appear for it, but not immediately," said Binstock.

Still, Microsoft is moving aggressively to put the full power of Kinect into commercial developers' hands. The Kinect for Windows SDK, which will be available within the next several weeks (Microsoft did not provide a specific release date), gives ISVs the ability to create apps that leverage Kinect's most advanced capabilities, including sound localization, depth and distance interpretation, skeletal tracking, and advanced audio processing.

Microsoft hopes that the promise of hands-free interaction, along with advances in 3D technology, will lend a new lease on life to Windows PCs, which, for all the bells and whistles Microsoft has added with new OS releases, have changed very little in the past decade in terms of their basic capabilities.

"We believe the combined creativity of Microsoft and the academic research and enthusiast communities will lead to new experiences that will transform our relationship with computers," Microsoft said.

Apple's iOS operating system - The basis for the success of the iPhone and iPad

Apple's iOS operating system was designed for the Mac but now operates scores of mobile devices and is the platform for 350,000 apps. But it is not immune to criticism, especially about its guidelines and its hesitance to use Flash.

The first iPhone, which hit the market about four years ago, truly awed most users and amazed some of the giants of the mobile phone industry. Now, there's hardly a manufacturer who doesn't have at least one phone that mimics the iPhone model.

The iOS operating system, which redefined the use of mobile gadgets, deserves some of that credit, especially since it now runs the iPod touch, the iPad and the Apple TV set-top box.

Thanks to the tightly linked smartphone and app store Dell studio 1555 battery , providing access to all manner of application, Apple set the bar for everyone else.

'With iPhone and the App Store, Apple offers a complete ecosystem that makes things easier for its users,' says Juergen Kuri, chief editor of German tech website heise online.

That close-linked nature might irk some. 'But Google's Android could only be as successful as it is because it had a similar ecosystem,' Kuri says

After activation via iTunes, iPhone users have access to about 350,000 apps. But Apple's selectivity in picking which apps may be sold on the store has sparked some criticism, especially since some apps have been removed for reasons not entirely understood.

Attempts to block an app for internet telephony from rival Google led to a long and intense battle that eventually involved US telecoms regulators. There was the suspicion that Apple was coming under pressure from its telecom partner AT&T to pull the app because it provided cheap or free calls over the internet.

Since then, Apple has publicized its guidelines for publishing apps. Apple has also pointed out that its oversight of which software is made available provides built-in quality control for consumers.

Apple's refusal to support multimedia Flash Hp 6735b battery Dell d630 battery technology has also led to some talk. The format, which is very popular online, is used for playing moving images, like short videos. Apple's competitors make much in advertisements of the fact that they can use Flash.

The iOS system has the same Unix foundation as the Apple computer operating system Mac OS X. Unlike Windows, Mac OS X was very early in getting plugged into mobile hardware, says Stephan Ehrmann, chief editor of the magazine Mac & i.

And while Mac OS is the basis for the mobile system, it also profits from its offspring. With the release of version 10.6.6, Apple now also offers an App Store where the more deskbound can also download software.

Cash is the new king in Microsoft's battle to recruit and retain talent against Google and Facebook.

Cash is the new king in Microsoft's battle to recruit and retain talent against the twin gravitational forces of Google and Facebook.

The world's largest software company told employees on Thursday that it's giving them pay raises and changing the way it awards bonuses beginning this September.

Bonuses are getting bigger and will involve more cash compared to Microsoft Apple a1185 battery Compaq nc6000 battery  stock, although stock allocations are also increasing.

Further, Microsoft changed its compensation structure, to make the review and reward process clearer.
The goal is to keep Microsoft competitive in hiring, according to a memo from Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer sent to staff and seen by The Reg. Ballmer said:

Through our history, we have been THE place people came when they wanted to make a difference in the world through software, hardware and services. This is as true today as it has been at any time in our history, and the changes we're rolling out today will help ensure Microsoft continues to be the place that top talent comes to change the world.

According to Ballmer a portion of stock award targets are being moved into employees' base salary, meaning more cash up front.

Funding for Microsoft's Compaq nc4200 battery Ibm thinkpad r60 battery bonus and stock awards is increasing to deliver: "100 per cent or more of target bonus and stock awards to 80 per cent of our eligible employees." Ballmer said: "This is up from about 50% in prior years. The additional funding ensures our approach continues to support higher payouts to top performers."
Microsoft's old and rather complicated performance measurement system has been scrapped for something that uses a simple 1-5 relative performance rating. You can read more here from internal Microsoft blogger MiniMicrosoft.

The pay raises and increased cash bonuses come as Microsoft finds itself under growing pressure not just to compete against Google and Facebook for new engineering and product talent, but also to stop its current employees from joining them.

Microsoft has seen a slow and steady trickle of people depart for Google and Facebook and to others like Amazon and Juniper.

Staff have departed from engineering, marketing, product development, and advertising in the corporate division and from the Windows, Internet Explorer, online, Xbox, and - shockingly, given its success - Kinect groups. Employees have gone over to the offices of rivals in Microsoft's back yard of Washington State as well as in other geographies.

Microsoft has been consistently knocked for no longer being the place for innovation or excitement in tech.
But the Asus a32-f3 battery Mitac minote 8060 battery company has lagged behind where it matters most to employees: salary and compensation.
Microsoft ranks third behind Google and Facebook, according to Glassdoor.com, when it comes to average salary for a software engineer. At Microsoft, the average is $86,929, compared with $97,727 at Google and $108,909 at Facebook. A Microsoft product manager earns an average salary of $101,115, compared to $116,134 at Google and $125,000 at Facebook.

Significantly, the new system sees Microsoft shift compensation away from stock. Microsoft shares are not a growth commodity, and in the last five years, prices have ranged between $15 and $37. While Google's stock growth curve has slowed, shares have traded between $262 and $714. Facebook is not a listed company.
Making it harder for Microsoft is the fact Google and Facebook are locked in a salary and compensation arms race against each other. Google in late 2010 awarded a 10 per cent pay raise to all staff. According to reports, it has also offered millions of dollars in restricted stock or pay raises to stop staff going to Facebook. Sometimes the offers have worked, others not.

New solar battery - Transparent Photovoltaic Cells Turn Windows Into Solar Panels

A new class of transparent photovoltaic cells has been developed that can turn an ordinary windowpane into a solar panel without impeding the passage of visible light, scientists said Tuesday.

The cells could one day transform skyscrapers into giant solar collectors, said Richard Lunt, one of the researchers on the project.

“We think there’s a lot of potential to be able to integrate these into tall buildings,” Dr. Lunt, a postdoctoral researcher at the M.I.T. Research Laboratory of Acer aspire 5610 battery dell latitude d620 battery Electronics, said in an interview.

Richard Lunt, a researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, demonstrates the transparency of the new solar cell.Geoffrey Supran/M.I.T. Richard Lunt, a researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, demonstrates the transparency of the new solar cell.

Previous attempts at transparent solar cells have either failed to achieve high efficiency or blocked too much light to be used in windows. But the new cells, based on organic molecules similar to dyes and pigments, are tailored to absorb only the near-infrared spectrum and have the potential to transform that light into electricity at relatively high efficiency.

The current efficiency of the prototype cells is only about 2 percent, but some basic modifications, like stacking the cells, could increase efficiency to around 10 percent fairly easily, Dr. Lunt said.

The largest challenge in developing commercial applications for the new solar cells will be longevity. The cells could be packaged in the middle of double-paned windows Dell latitude e6400 battery , which would provide protection from the elements. But the longevity of the cells would still need to approach the life span of the windows themselves, which would not be replaced for decades.

“To make this thing truly useful, you do need to extend the lifetime, and make sure it reaches at least 20 years, or even longer than that,” said Vladimir Bulovic, a professor of electrical engineering at M.I.T. who collaborated on the development of the cells.

Mr. Bulovic said that previous work to extend the life span of organic light-emitting diodes, or LEDs, which share properties with the organic solar cells, indicated that the problem of longevity was not an extraordinarily difficult one.

“It appears at this point that this is an engineering problem,” he said. “I would expect that within a decade those will be solved issues.”

If the cells can be made long-lasting, they could be integrated into windows relatively cheaply, as much of the cost of conventional photovoltaics is not from the solar cell itself, but the materials it is mounted on, like aluminum and glass. Coating existing structures with solar cells would eliminate some of this material cost.

If the transparent cells ultimately prove commercially viable, the power they generate could significantly offset the energy use of large buildings, said Dr. Lunt, who will begin teaching at Michigan State University this fall.

“We’re not saying we could power the whole building, but we are talking about a significant amount of energy, enough for things like lighting and powering everyday electronics,” he said.

The Center for Excitonics, an Energy Frontier Research Center financed by the Department of Energy, provided funds for the journal Applied Physics Letters.

Is that a good idea for iPad 2 in kindergarten classrooms ?

Schools are excited about putting the Apple iPad into classrooms. But how young is too young?

Move over, finger paint. A school district in Maine recently approved a $200,000 initiative that would give each of its 285 kindergarten students a new hands-on tool: Their very own iPad 2.

Auburn, Maine, school district will be bringing the $499 Apple tablet devices into kindergarten classrooms starting in the fall with the aim of increasing literacy rates from 62 percent to 90 percent.

This isn't the first time Maine has become an early tech adopter in its educational systems. In 2002, it became the first state to give out laptop computers Hp pavilion dv9700 battery Hp pavilion dv6000 battery  to its middle school students and later expanded the program to high schoolers as a part of a move to boost literacy.

Some critics have blasted the iPad plan — saying the school district should not putting high-tech hardware in the hands of kindergartners and that they shouldn't be investing a large sum of money, especially amid budget cuts that could take away teacher instruction.

"We received some concern from individuals mainly about the developmental age in kids using this type of technology and the cost of it all," school district superintendent Tom Morrill told iPadNewsDaily. "However, we also received great comments and feedback from all over the world from supporters and experts saying that the device is indeed instrumental in helping young children learn, especially with special education students, people with speech issues and other learning challenges."

"Overall, we think we're going to make some remarkable discoveries and believe this is the next-step tool in helping literacy."

Child development experts indeed believe that iPads are exactly what could help young students better learn in the classroom.

"We lose a lot of kids through the education system over time,” said Sandra Calvert, a professor and director of the Children's Digital Media Center at Georgetown University.

"If you start them young with innovative Sony vgp-bps13 battery Sony vgp-bps2a battery technology and keep them engaged, it's the way to go. There will be some changes in how teachers will go about incorporating these new platforms, but overall, it will be a very profound tool if used properly."

One of the major challenges teachers face is catering content to each student in a classroom filled with different skill levels. With the help of educational software on the iPad 2, teachers can oversee and pick programs and levels based on the skills a student needs.

"The iPad 2 can cater specifically to each child's needs, strengths and weaknesses, and that has tremendous potential for improving the overall learning experience," Calvert said.

However, Calvert stressed that technology like this should not replace or undermine the importance of a good teacher.

"There's a human emotional response that is a part of learning, too," Calvert said. "Kids develop relationships with teachers and there is a sense of warmth and encouragement that comes with that, too. Computers can be fun and engaging, but it's not the same experience as interacting with a real person."

Superintendent Morrill said that people shouldn’t fear that the new iPad implementation will replace teachers in the future.

"The human element will never leave the Sony vgp-bps8a battery Gateway squ-412 battery formula because education is still a human business," Morrill said. "This will just provide an opportunity to spend more focus time on developing projects, helping students overcome certain challenges and give teachers new ways to custom teach."

    How young is too young?

Although Seton Hall University in New Jersey welcomed incoming students with new iPads last year and middle school students in parts of Singapore have traded school books for e-books read on the iPad, this will be one of the first times students at such a young age in U.S. will be given the high-tech devices.

But some believe people of any age, especially kindergartners, are good candidates to use the iPad 2, which is even (as of today) now available for purchase at Toys R Us.

"Kindergartners are not too young for the iPad — in fact, it's an ideal platform for them," Calvert said. "This age group can use their hands, grow fine motor skills and not have to worry about moving a mouse as they would on a traditional desktop computer. Since an iPad is so light and intuitive to use, their focus can be on the educational content and not the hardware Toshiba pa3533u-1brs battery Apple a1185 battery ."

The device also allows kids to practice certain skills, such as identifying certain letters and colors.
However, superintendent Morrill said that the devices will not be used in place of other hands-on skills that are critical in the development process.

"Kids still need to jump in and get dirty," Morrill said. "They need to paint and do fine-motor activities, as well as sing, dance and share stories. We're not going to be replacing these acitivities. We're only talking about integration."

Allison Druin, author of "Mobile Technology for Children: Designing for Interaction and Learning" (Morgan Kaufmann Publishers, 2009) agrees that the tablet is well-suited for this age range.

"Kids are used to growing up in a technology age, so they will know how to handle it," Druin said. "The iPod Touch is similar in that it can be used with kids at a young age, but when creating something rather than just consuming information, it’s harder to do so on smaller screens."

    Challenges ahead

"Like any other Toshiba pa3534u-1bas battery Apple a1175 battery tool, if used effectively and appropriately, there are endless opportunities," Edwards said. "It's not going to solve every educational dilemma and will definitely create a new set of challenges — such as trying to keep kids focused on what you want them to do — but overall, this is a very good thing."

Calvert also noted that the quality of the apps the children use will also help determine the success of the pilot of program in Maine.

"If the right software is selected, young children will be entering the educational sphere with such enthusiasm and excitement," Calvert said. "However, if the software is boring and dry, a child will lose interest."

Druin, an associate dean for research at University of Maryland's information school, said she thinks the outcome of the Maine initiative could have implications for whether or not similar programs crop up around the country.
"Mobile technology is the wave of the future, so you can either try to fight it or figure out ways to use it to the best advantage," Druin said.

Windows 8 News - Updating list of features to date

With screenshots and leaks galore — though, not on the scale of Windows 7’s post-Vista transformation — there is an ongoing stream of information coming out of the web, from ordinary bloggers to broadsheet newspapers, regarding the next-generation operating system.

This post will update as and when new features are discovered, and will include descriptions, any pertinent information and a picture in the corresponding screenshot gallery too, wherever possible.

Each new feature will be verified as accurately as possible. While none of the features here can be verified to one hundred percent, this updating feature set will allow both consumers and enterprises to gauge what may be coming next in the upcoming release, set for next year.

    New Welcome screen

A new ‘Metro UI’ (the user interface for Windows Phone 7 devices) has been seen in the latest builds of Windows 8. Featuring the date and time, another video showed the leaked Windows 8 default wallpaper as discovered by fellow ZDNet colleague Stephens Chapman, where users are shown a list of users on the local machine to click on and enter their password.

    ‘Modern’ Task Manager

A new task manager emerged in one of the latest builds, redesigning how programs and system-critical applications are displayed. Frankly, for task manager veterans, the entire feel of the application has changed entirely. However, it is more in-tune with the look and feel of Windows 8, though devoid of a Ribbon bar — for now, at least. It also includes a more ‘advanced’ task manager for those who still require seeing extensive statistics of their hardware.

    Portable Workspaces

One of the most highly anticipated features, discovered in an early build of Windows 8 — the portable workspace, allowing you to effectively put Windows on a USB stick. On the other hand, it looks more likely to become an enterprise only feature, and further limited to those with a USB stick or external hard drive that is at least 16GB in size. However, already this could give an early indication of the final hard drive memory footprint of the upcoming operating system.

    Aero auto-colourisation

A new feature that reacts to the most prominent colour of the Windows wallpaper. This already exists under Windows 7, where the icons in the taskbar ‘reflect’ the brightest or most dominant colour in the icon. However, this will be ported to reflect the entire desktop, including Start menu and taskbar, depending on the colour of the wallpaper.

    Hybrid Booting

Seen in the latest builds, Hybrid Boot is a cross between hibernation and sleep mode, and more of an evolution of the existing hibernation function. Core operating system files are ‘put to sleep’ which enables the startup time to be significantly reduced.

    Simple system ‘reset’

Found in an early build of Windows 8, the functionality exists to allow a user or system administrator to ‘reset’ the operating system back to the default settings. As so many applications and settings are expected to be cloud based (see below), this would in theory allow you to get back up and running in minutes as opposed to hours. From the screenshots, it appears to be a quick and simple process, with user accounts and personal files kept in backup space, before your default Windows settings are restored.

The Ribbon bar features heavily in the Office 2007 and Office 2010 suite of applications, and since ported to Windows 7 in basic applications, from Wordpad to Paint. This was to open up the functionality to touch users, but will be capitalised upon further in Windows 8, as seen in recent builds leaked to the web. Seen already in Windows Explorer, it will be key to replacing the ‘old’ interface that Windows has had up until now.

    ARM processor ‘tablet support’

Windows 8 will have ARM support, a low-power processor which allows devices to run longer on batteries. As seen during an Internet Explorer 10 preview, one of the devices was running an ARM processor, and it is expected to launch with full ARM support making tablets a more likely option.

    Genuine center

This new center will control and organise your Windows licences. Seen in the most recent builds of Windows 8, the Genuine Center will allow you to manage the license of Windows on your computer, and perhaps even control other Microsoft products, like Office too. If you have a computer not activated or without a product key, you will not only be able to buy one straight from your desktop, but also purchase a key for another machine, too.

    Cloud-based roaming profiles

Roaming profiles have yet been semi-mythical, but have been uncovered over the last few days. Though it is not entirely clear in what form this will take — whether Windows Live Hp pavilion dv2200 battery Hp 510 battery Mesh will be integrated as part of the operating system, or whether it will be defined in another unknown fashion — it is clear that Windows 8 will allow your user settings and profile to be ‘cloudified’ to other machines.

    Push notifications

Part of Microsoft’s tablet and mobile device strategy, it appears push notifications will allow content to be displayed on screen similar to that of Windows Phone 7. Little is known about this functionality as of yet, however.

    Improved disk cleanup

In Windows 8, there will be an overhaul of the disk cleanup facility, designed to clear the junk out of your operating system, like temporary files and the Recycle Bin. More options are given, and better categorising of file types corresponding to their size.

    ‘Modern Reader’ PDF support

‘Modern Reader’ is the name of the PDF reading application designed and built using AppX technology, which bridge between the mobile and the desktop workspace gap. According to one, as the application packages are very similar to phone application packages, making applications easier to port across from the desktop to the mobile, including tablets.

    Internet Explorer 10

There is all but no doubt that Windows 8 Hp nc8430 battery Hp hstnn-lb42 battery will come with a pre-installed version of Internet Explorer, probably IE10, but may not be set to ‘as default’ depending on your user location. It is not unlike Microsoft to bundle in a beta of Internet Explorer with a beta of Windows, and including the browser with the operating system seems entirely “logical”.

    Internet Explorer ‘Immersive’

A slimmed down version of the browser, using a new user interface codenamed ‘Immersive’, will feel and look like the phone version, but will have all the rendering of the desktop version. Using a new platform for developing applications that scale up and down from the desktop to the phone and vice versa, it will allow many more applications to be scalable and adaptable to their environments.

    SmartScreen file filter

Previously only seen in the Windows Live suite of products, SmartScreen filters out spam or bad links based on community responses. In Windows 8, however, an option has been seen to check files downloaded by a browser, not just Internet Explorer, to ensure that the download source is safe and verified. It simply adds an extra layer of security protection to the operating system.

    Windows App Store

Likened to Apple’s App Store for iOS and Mac devices, Microsoft is set to include its own application web store in the next version of Windows. Dubbed the Windows App Store, unsurprisingly, it has yet to turn up in a leaked build, though screenshots seem to confirm its existence.

    History Vault

This feature could be seen as the competing ‘product’ to the Time Machine in Mac OS X. Acting as a backup facility, it will replace the Backup and Restore feature in Windows 7 Hp pavilion dv6 battery Sony vgp-bps13 battery , while giving users the option to create regular, automatic backups. Users will be able to restore individual files from way back into the past, while offering a ‘new user interface’ similar to that of the Time Machine.

    Step-by-step install

Windows 8 from the word go should be simple to use, and the setup process appears to show exactly that. With easy run through steps to guide even the most novice of users through the daunting task of installing an operating system, the process should be a breeze. The ‘Metro UI’ of the Windows Phone 7 operating system is clear in the setup, too, with fonts and user experience looking clean and sharp.

    ISO mounting

ISO images are files which contain the exact coding, files and folders of the contents on a CD or DVD. Windows 8 will include functionality, as see in more recent builds, to not only mount images to read and deal with, but also the functionality to burn them. This could negate many image burning applications out there on the market already.

    Native wake on LAN

If a computer is turned off or hibernating and it has enabled the ‘wake on LAN’ feature, Windows 8 will be able to push a network request through to turn it back on again, to perform the functions that it needs to.

New tablet computer that running the Windows ,3 OS’s Android and Maemo

    consumer choice tablet edition

If you are even the least bit interested in technology you know that having lots of choice is good. In a new market choice leads to competition among makers, which leads into new aToshiba pa3534u-1brs battery dvancements in that given market.

Choice affects any given tech market as a whole but little choices or options as they are often called have their own effects that are important in their own right. For example the choice or option to have a varying group of operating systems being compatible with your computing device is a meaningful feature for a growing number of buyers.

    Android Maemo MeeGo Windows

Evolve Three of Australia is gearing up to launch a new tablet computer that offers buyers the option of running the device on either Android, Windows (Windows 7 comes pre-installed) operating systems. The Evolve Three Maestro C is the name of the tablet.

For the Maestro C the folks at Evolve Three have gone with the new versatile Intel Atom Z670 1.5GHz processor. The Z670 is from the new Atom Z6xx series of Intel Atom Oak Trail range of embedded systems processors. Intel has already outlined the features for the Z670 and one feature the CPU offers is the ability to run a multitude of operating systems (Android, Chrome OS, Windows Dell inspiron 1520 battery hp 2230s battery  and Maemo).

Other than the Intel Atom Z670 processor the Maestro C also offers a unique design. You see the tablet has an optional wireless Bluetooth keyboard (specific to the tablet) and the left side of the tablet can be adjusted for use as a stand. See the image below.

    Evolve Three Maestro C

Now that is a different look isn’t’ it?

The wireless keyboard itself is quite thin and portable, but it still offers full QWERTY key support and a touchpad (godsend for those looking to use Windows 7 heavily). And the really cool part about the keyboard using magnets can double as the screen cover. FYI the keyboard/cover when situated on the tablet puts it in hibernation/sleep mode. You will see what I mean in the demo video just below.

Some other major features being included with the Maestro C that you need to know about follow. The tablet has a 10.1-inch WSVGA (1024×600) capacitive touch widescreen (16:9) LCD, 2GB of DDR2 RAM, 32GB 1.8″ SSD (Optional 64GB), Bluetooth 2.1, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, optional 3G (GPS and A-GPS include.), 1.3MP webcam, 2x USB 2.0, 1x HDMI, Micro SD Slot (support up to 32GB) and 10+ Hours Running Time (Windows 7) or 16+ Hours Running Time (Android) from the 6 Cell Li-polymer battery.

According to Evolve Three the 10.1-inch Maestro C will come to the US in June with a starting price of $729. The tablet for Australian residents will start at $825 AUD. That’s a lot of money to ask, I know, but is the potential experience available with the device actually worth the price tag?

IPhone and IPad News - Atari's Greatest Hits for IPhone and IPad

Atari's Greatest Hits provides gamers of a certain age with a blast from the past. It also illustrates the practical limits of nostalgia.

The iOS game, which runs in optimized form on the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, features near perfect recreations of the Atari console and arcade games you probably wasted too much time and too many quarters on in the early 1980s. Atari's Greatest Hits Acer aspire 4315 battery Dell inspiron 9400 battery is a free download, but it initially comes with just one offering-that table tennis game of the future from yesteryear known as Pong. (If Atari really wanted to recreate the old-timey gaming experience, shouldn't the complimentary title be Combat, just as it was in olden days?) You can quickly build up your library of Atari games through the miracle of in-app purchases, though-four-game packs are available for just $1, or you can buy the whole lot for $15. All told, Atari's Greatest Hits gives you access to up to 18 Atari arcade games and 92 virtual cartridges from the venerable Atari 2600 gaming console.

The appeal of Atari's Greatest Hits should be immediately apparent to the now-grown children of the '70s and '80s. All those games you enjoyed as a kid-or more to the point, all those games your parents were too cruel to buy for you-are right there for you to own on your iPad or iPhone. And there's nothing you can do about it now, Dad! I'll spend my allowance however I like!

Then you download some of the games available through Atari's Greatest Hits. And you discover that maybe your old man had a point.

It's not that Atari's Greatest Hits doesn't do a fine job loving recreating games like Yars' Revenge or Haunted House. Every detail-the graphics, the sound, even the dog-eared manual with instructions for hooking up your Atari 2600 system-has been lovingly recreated. The Hp pavilion dv6000 battery Toshiba pa3594u-1brs battery games play exactly like they did back when you were listening to the likes of Olivia Newton-John and John Cougar on the radio. And that's sort of the problem-graphics that didn't look too impressive on your old CRT television come across as downright archaic on the gorgeous display of an iPhone 4 or iPad.

There's also the not insignificant matter of gameplay. The only nod to modernity in Atari's Greatest Hits is the ability to add multiple players via Bluetooth. Otherwise, the developer attempts to recreate the Atari 2600's single-button joystick on a touch interface with a joystick-shaped d-pad on the left side of the screen and a button on the right. (You can also summon up the toggle-based controls of the console itself to switch between game modes and the like.) It's not exactly a smooth merging of styles. For one thing, the controls take up a third of the screen, which seems a particularly wasteful use of the iPad's real estate; for another, that joystick is not so easy to operate. The arcade-style games fare a little better-they're primarily button-driven, after all. But even controls like the trackball in Centipede don't feel as seamlessly implemented as they ought to be.

I can appreciate the developer's commitment to historical fidelity, but it seems like steps could have been taken to improve the gameplay. On that included version of Pong Dell inspiron 1000 battery Hp pavilion dv9700 battery , for instance, there's no border outlining the playing surface, making it very hard to anticipate where the monochromatic ball is going to ricochet. There are also some disappointing interface decisions-you scroll through games either via a Cover Flow-style carousel or with an A-to-Z listing of titles. Neither approach makes it easy to see what games you've already purchased.

I imagine that gamers who grew up with an Atari 2600 will enjoy a few warm memories from Atari's Greatest Hits before the limitations of the iOS implementation force them to abandon the past forever. For modern-day gamers, selling them on the merits of Atari's Greatest Hits will be like showing them cave paintings and arguing that they're every bit as fun to watch as television. Atari's Greatest Hits is good for a stroll down memory lane-it just happens to be a very short walk.

ipad New Function - Adobe to Stream Live Video to the iPad.

Adobe is demoing an update to its Flash Media Server at the National Association of Broadcasters show this week that will enable publishers to stream not just to Flash-enabled web and mobile browsers, but also devices like Samsung TVs, the Motorola Xoom tablet and Atrix smartphone — and even to Apple iOS devices like the iPad.

In a blog post earlier this week, Adobe product Dell latitude d830 battery Dell latitude d620 battery manager Kevin Towes showed off the new technology, including providing a demo video of a live video stream with outputs to the Safari browser on a Mac, as well as to an iPad 2 and Motorola Xoom tablet.

While the iPad has become an exciting new way for viewers to stream live and on-demand video, the device doesn’t support Adobe’s Flash format, which means much of today’s existing web video isn’t available for iPad users. Publishers that do want to reach iPad users have to re-encode those videos for HTML5 video playback — and if they want to take advantage of adaptive bit rate technology for live video, they have to format those streams to support Apple’s HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) protocol.

With Adobe’s Flash Media Live Encoder 4 and future version of Flash Media Server, the company is adding support for HLS. Doing so could enable a video publisher to support live streams to the iPad from the same streaming server it uses for streaming to web browsers and other devices. That could simplify the delivery infrastructure not just for publishers themselves, but also for CDNs and enterprises that rely on Flash Media Server to stream live events. As Towes explained in the blog post:

“By adding support for HLS within the Flash Media Server Dell vostro 1500 battery Compaq nc6000 battery , Adobe is reducing the publishing complexity for broadcasters who need to reach browsers supporting HLS through HTML5 (such as Safari) or devices where Adobe Flash is not installed. Where Flash is installed, Flash Media Server packages the stream using MPEG4-fragments (F4F) to deliver video over HTTP to Flash.”

Despite Apple’s insistence on keeping Flash off its iOS platforms, Adobe has been hard at work creating hooks that allow developers to use its creative tools to make Flash-based apps that also work on the iPhone and iPad. It also recently rolled out a content protection technology called Adobe Pass which enables companies interested in TV Everywhere services to authenticate users on web browsers and on mobile devices that don’t support Flash. Adobe doesn’t have an expected launch date for iOS/HLS support on its Flash Media Server, but the company will likely begin trialing the technology with media customers soon.

HTC’s newest handset - Mobile Media Needs To Be Set Free

This morning’s introduction of HTC’s newest handset, the Sensation 4G, really got my gadget juices flowing. How could they not when I saw a smartphone that’s fully loaded to quickly handle nearly any activity thanks to a dual-core processor, fast mobile broadband connectivity, high-resolution display and 1080p video recording capabilities?

The software side looks great as well due to an advanced version of the Sense user interface. But I’m actually bummed out by the new HTC Watch hp 530 battery Hp 530 adapter  video service because it’s not solving a problem, it’s actually adding to a problem: we have too many disparate video ecosystems in the mobile space and more of them on the way.

Don’t believe me? Here’s the first Twitter reaction from Romit Mehta on HTC’s new handset and video store, which I think sums up the situation nicely:

I agree with Mehta: we really don’t need another video store and I wish the video industry would find a way to do what its peers in the music space grudgingly did by reducing the amount of protected media. A few years back, any song you purchased came with DRM, or Digital Rights Management protection, but now consumers can purchase DRM-free MP3 files from Apple, Amazon and others.

The same can’t be said of commercially produced television and movie media, most of which is heavily protected so it can’t be copied. But that’s only half of the problem, because each new video store that opens further reduces the number of devices you can play such video content upon. HTC Watch will rent or sell you videos, but do you think you’ll be able to transfer them to a non-HTC hp 2230s battery device? Not likely.

The same goes for the Samsung Media Hub, coming to both the Samsung Player devices and the new Samsung Galaxy S II handset: you can watch content from the Samsung store, but not transfer it to another mobile device. And the biggest example of them all is the Apple iTunes Store which limits video playback to a certain number of authorized Apple computers, iOS devices or through Apple TV. A growing number of services are allowing the content to be piped to a television set, but that’s a recent development and doesn’t help when you’re on the go.

More related news you maybe like :

And just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse, it does! Netflix is one of the few cross-platform video distributors, supporting Apple’s iOS devices, desktop browsers and even the new Microsoft Windows Phone 7 devices. But if you have an Android device, which is currently the top selling smartphone platform, you’re out of luck. Why? Because there’s no hardware standard used by Android that guarantees the Netflix DRM will work effectively. There will be, according to the company, but it may be limited to devices with certain processors in the future, meaning current Android handset owners may get nothing but a screen full of static.

The entire digital video debacle is akin to purchasing a television from Sony only to find that certain TV programs aren’t available to watch unless you had bought a set from Panasonic. Perhaps that’s a overly crude analogy, but there’s merit in it. One could argue a similar situation with smartphone apps: once you pick a platform, you only get the apps that developers choose to support, so not every app will be available across mobile operating systems. There’s even a lock-in fee associated with smartphone apps. But apps are created to run on different software dell d630 battery  platforms. In contrast, video is universal and it’s content, not an app. As a result, mobile video shouldn’t be limited to certain devices or platforms by increasing the number of video stores.

The web is the greatest distribution network ever, especially when  it comes to content because we can all be broadcasters to a degree. It’s time for content providers to embrace the web and set our mobile media free because limiting it to certain platforms or handsets is likely also limiting sales: the more freedom consumers have to move content around to the time, place and device of their choosing, the more apt they are to rent or buy that video. Oh and not to rush the content providers and video distribution business, but they might want to do this before the “media tablet” sales really take off so we can start watching video on our handset from one vendor and finish it later on a tablet from another. Call me a cranky movie critic if you will, but I’d say such a situation would be quite enjoyable.

iPad Reviews - iPad becomes fully integrated Photoshop tool

Adobe Color Lava, Eazel, and Nav for Photoshop icons for iOS
Adobe is fully integrating mobile tablets into Photoshop CS5, turning them into powerful peripherals for content creation and display. On Monday, Adobe announced the Photoshop Touch SDK, and three iPad applications (Color Lava, Eazel, and Nav) which show the impressive new capabilities that an iPad or touchscreen tablet can give your Photoshop setup.

With the launch of the iPad 2 Acer aspire 5520 battery  Acer as07b71 battery earlier this year, Apple launched iPad-optimized versions of Garageband and iMovie, two pieces of software that finally began to prove mobile tablets aren't just for content consumption, but also content creation. But those apps, like Photoshop for iPad, are just pared down versions of desktop software meant to stand on their own.

Adobe has taken a completely different approach with these iOS applications: rather than standing alone, these apps wirelessly pair up with a PC running Photoshop CS5, and extend the workspace out to the iPad's touchscreen. This gives users easier access to canvases, layers, tools, albums of completed art, and many other capabilities.

Adobe has taken a completely different approach with these iOS applications: rather than standing alone, these apps wirelessly pair up with a PC running Photoshop CS5, and extend the workspace out to the iPad's touchscreen. Eazel

    Adobe Eazel for Photoshop (iPad)

Eazel turns the iPad into a finger painting canvas, where all the Photoshop tools are at the user's disposal. iPad finger painting art has made its way all the way to the cover of the New Yorker, and Adobe seeks to give artists more tools than have previously been available.

using Eazel for Photoshop on iPad

    Nav

    Adobe Nav for Photoshop (iPad)

Photoshop CS5 has over 70 individual tools, but only a third of them are shown on screen by default. With Nav, Photoshop users can create their own toolboxes that show as many or as few tools as they need out on the iPad's Dell inspiron 1200 battery Lenovo 3000 v100 battery  screen. From there, they can command and control Photoshop; for example, they can change colors, screen rows, begin new projects, or view and navigate through up to 200 Photoshop project files. Even if the wireless connection between the PC and the tablet is broken, all of the project files can still be viewed on the tablet, so if an artist needs to show his work to co-workers down the hall, he can simply walk away with his art in his hands.

    Adobe Nav for Photoshop (iPad)

Adobe considers these capabilities to be platform agnostic, because they are all possible through the Photoshop Touch SDK which can be downloaded freely right now at Adobe.com/devnet/photoshop.
"Photoshop is basically set up as a server, so any mobile device --or even another PC-- can communicate over the open socket," Photoshop Engineer Tom Ruark told Betanews. "We've got examples using AIR, Android, and iOS, so there are tons of opportunities here. We've got a huge scripting interface available to developers. You just put the Javascript code on your tablet, then send that code to us over the connection and Photoshop executes it just as if you were there on the machine running an action or script."
