GE plans big solar factory – the largest U.S. solar panel factory

GE plans big solar factory post by goodlaptopbattery.co.uk
General Electric said Thursday that it is planning to build what will be the largest U.S. solar panel factory, but it’s unclear whether Michigan is one of the sites under consideration for the new plant.
The proposed facility would produce thin-film solar panels developed by PrimeStar Solar, a five-year-old company in Arvada, Colo., that GE has acquired. The plant would employ 400 workers and manufacture enough panels to power 80,000 homes a year. The company said the panels have set a new record for efficiency.
“Multiple locations are being considered for the new facility, with the final location to be announced shortly,” GE said in a statement.
A GE spokesman did not respond to requests seeking comment Thursday.
In a statement, Michael Finney, CEO of the Michigan Economic Development Corp., said, “We have a strong and longstanding relationship with GE and were successful in bringing their advanced manufacturing and software technology center to Van Buren Township. As a matter of policy, we do not publicly discuss new  projects that we may or may not be pursuing with the company.”
PrimeStar operates an equipment center in Montague, north of Muskegon. GE has owned a Discount Dell studio 1555 battery Dell vostro 1500 battery stake in the start-up firm since September 2007.
In recent years, Michigan has worked to form a solar power industry hub in Saginaw by offering generous tax and other incentives to lure manufacturers. However, Gov. Rick Snyder’s budget proposal calls for sharply reducing the amount of tax credits offered to businesses.
GE is no stranger to Michigan. In October 2009, it opened an advanced manufacturing and software technology center in Van Buren Township. The center develops software, processes and technologies for the company’s manufacturing operations.

The center employs 600 people, 90% of them from Michigan, said GE spokeswoman Deia Campanelli. The center expects to grow to more than 1,100 employees by 2013. It will house GE’s largest concentration of information technology professionals worldwide.
Michigan is home to four thin-film solar panel factories in Auburn Hills and Greenville that are owned by Energy Conversion Devices. However, the Auburn Hills company, which has received state tax breaks, has struggled in recent years amid increased competition.
