Cell phones have long strived to act like other high-tech devices, but now Motorola’s new Atrix 4G phone, with the aid of a dock, can double as a laptop computer.
It is no secret that for years smartphones have been trying to replace pretty much every high-tech device — camera, camcorder, video game console and so on. Now that list includes the laptop , due to Motorola’s new Atrix 4G. It is so powerful, in fact, that when a user plugs it into a special dock, it becomes the brains of a laptop computer.
“Once you snap the phone onto the laptop dock, it brings you to what’s called the ‘Webtop.’ The Webtop is the application you can run and have that full desktop experience on the side,” says Siegfred Hennigan of AT&T. “The left side of the screen is your phone, so you can be surfing the Web and taking the phone call at the same time.”
The laptop dock features an 11-1/2 inch display, full-size keyboard, touchpad mouse, two USB ports, stereo speakers and weighs just over two pounds. Experts say seeing a mobile device try to fill the role of multiple devices is a good move.

But I’m not sure that it’s there yet, until we get more processing power for the device itself, and of course applications,” says Todd Haselton of MobileBurn.com. “When you have the operating system preloaded on this device, it’s just a light version of Linux. So you’re not getting full Windows or anything like that, or iOS as you would with an iPad dell latitude d830 battery .”
The Motorola Atrix, which is currently only available through AT&T, can be bought alone for $200, or as a bundle with the dock for $500, both with a two-year service contract.
Users who want to surf on the dock will have to spring for the $20 monthly tethering fee.
Customers who get the Atrix and a dock together will qualify for a $100 rebate.
